The Role

We are seeking an experienced Platform Engineer with strong expertise in Sybase database administration and engineering to support a Banking client. The role is responsible for ensuring the availability, performance, security, scalability, and operational stability of Sybase database platforms supporting business-critical banking workloads. Secondary expertise in Microsoft SQL Server is required to support ancillary applications and integrated banking systems.
The ideal candidate will have extensive hands-on experience managing enterprise-scale Sybase environments within highly regulated financial institutions. The role involves database administration, performance tuning, capacity planning, automation, backup and recovery, production support, and collaboration with application and infrastructure teams to ensure optimal database operations.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Administer, maintain, and support Sybase ASE database environments hosting critical banking and treasury applications.
- Perform installation, configuration, patching, upgrades, and lifecycle management of Sybase database platforms.
- Monitor database performance, availability, and capacity to ensure optimal system operation.
- Analyze and resolve database-related incidents, performance bottlenecks, locking issues, and production outages.
- Perform database performance tuning through query optimization, indexing strategies, and resource utilization analysis.
- Manage database backup, recovery, restoration, and disaster recovery processes.
- Ensure database environments meet recovery point objectives (RPO) and recovery time objectives (RTO).
- Support application teams during deployments, releases, upgrades, and production changes.
- Design and implement database maintenance plans, housekeeping activities, and performance improvement initiatives.
- Administer user access, database security, authentication, and authorization controls in accordance with banking security policies.
- Implement database monitoring, alerting, and proactive health checks to minimize service disruptions.
- Perform capacity planning, storage management, and growth forecasting for database environments.
- Support database replication, high availability, clustering, and failover configurations where applicable.
- Develop and maintain automation scripts for database administration and operational activities.
- Provide secondary support for Microsoft SQL Server environments and related database services.
- Collaborate with infrastructure, application, middleware, and security teams to resolve cross-functional issues.
- Support audit reviews, compliance assessments, and regulatory requirements for database platforms.
- Maintain database documentation, operational procedures, recovery plans, and technical standards.
- Participate in root cause analysis (RCA) activities and implement preventive actions for recurring issues.
- Provide L2/L3 production support and participate in on-call support rotations as required.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives related to database reliability, performance, automation, and operational excellence.

Required Technical and Professional Experience
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline.
Minimum 6+ years of hands-on experience as a Database Engineer, Database Administrator, or Platform Engineer supporting enterprise database environments.
Strong expertise in Sybase ASE database administration, configuration, and performance tuning.
Proven experience managing production Sybase environments in banking, financial services, or other mission-critical industries.
Good working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server administration and support.
Strong experience with database installation, upgrades, patch management, and migration activities.
Hands-on experience with database backup, recovery, disaster recovery, and business continuity processes.
Expertise in SQL query optimization, indexing, execution plan analysis, and performance troubleshooting.
Experience supporting high-availability, replication, clustering, and failover database architectures.
Strong knowledge of database security, access controls, encryption, and compliance requirements.
Experience with Unix/Linux operating systems and database-related administration activities.
Proficiency in Shell Scripting, Korn Shell (ksh), PowerShell, or automation scripting tools.
Experience with database monitoring and performance management tools.
Knowledge of storage systems, server infrastructure, and platform engineering principles.
Preferred Technical and Professional Experience
Familiarity with ITIL processes including Incident, Problem, Change, and Release Management.
Experience supporting Temenos applications (Transact, T24, Kondor, Corona, or related platforms) is highly desirable.
Understanding of banking, treasury, payments, and financial services application ecosystems.
Experience working within highly regulated environments and supporting audit and compliance requirements.
Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis capabilities.
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
Ability to work effectively in geographically distributed teams supporting global banking operations.
Relevant certifications in Sybase, SQL Server, Database Administration, Cloud Platforms, or ITIL would be advantageous.
