ROLE OVERVIEW
As an Embedded Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for developing, integrating, and validating the embedded hardware and firmware that powers AnduraX's reusable re-entry vehicle. You will develop firmware for flight computers, sensor interfaces, communication systems, payload electronics, and mission-critical embedded devices that operate reliably across every phase of flight. Working closely with Electrical & Avionics, Flight Software, GNC, Systems Engineering, and Test teams, you will design embedded software, develop low-level drivers, interface with aerospace sensors and actuators, and ensure reliable communication between onboard subsystems. Your work will form the foundation upon which the vehicle's avionics and autonomous flight systems operate.
This role requires strong expertise in embedded firmware development, microcontroller programming, hardware bring-up, communication protocols, debugging, and real-time systems. You will play a key role in developing robust flight electronics for India's first privately developed reusable re-entry vehicle.
This role combines embedded software development with laboratory testing, PCB bring-up, hardware integration, environmental testing, and flight-test support. Candidates should be comfortable transitioning between firmware development, hardware debugging, integration, and field operations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Embedded Firmware Development
- Design, develop, and maintain embedded firmware for flight-critical systems.
- Develop modular, reusable, and maintainable firmware architectures.
- Write efficient and reliable embedded software in C and C++.
- Develop bootloaders and firmware update mechanisms.
- Optimize firmware for memory, power consumption, and processor utilization.
- Develop software documentation and maintain version control.
Microcontroller & Peripheral Development
- Develop firmware for STM32 and ARM Cortex-M-based embedded systems.
- Interface with IMUs, GNSS receivers, barometers, magnetometers, temperature sensors, ADCs, DACs, and payload electronics.
- Develop Hardware Abstraction Layers (HAL) and peripheral drivers.
- Configure timers, DMA, interrupts, watchdogs, and low-power operating modes.
- Support processor selection and embedded architecture decisions.
Communication Systems
- Develop communication interfaces between onboard subsystems.
- Implement UART, SPI, I²C, CAN, RS-422, RS-485, USB, and Ethernet protocols where applicable.
- Integrate telemetry radios and communication modules.
- Develop robust communication protocols for fault-tolerant operation.
- Optimize communication latency and reliability.
Hardware Integration & Validation
- Support custom PCB bring-up and hardware debugging.
- Validate embedded systems during laboratory and integration testing.
- Develop hardware diagnostic and self-test software.
- Perform board-level debugging using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other electronic test equipment.
- Support environmental qualification and system validation.
- Investigate hardware and firmware anomalies and implement corrective actions.
Verification & testing
- Develop automated firmware testing and validation procedures.
- Support Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing.
- Perform unit, integration, regression, and system-level testing.
- Validate firmware against system requirements and flight-test data.
- Maintain traceability between software requirements and implementation.
- Support software release management and configuration control.
Cross-Functional Leadership
- Work closely with Electrical & Avionics, Flight Software, GNC, Systems Engineering, Propulsion, Structures, and Test teams.
- Support integration of embedded systems into flight hardware.
- Mentor interns and junior engineers where required.
- Support engineering recruitment and technical interviews.
- Contribute to technical reviews including SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR, and FRR.
REQUIREMENTS
- B.Tech/M.Tech in Electronics Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Embedded Systems, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Robotics, Aerospace Engineering, or related disciplines.
- 3–5+ years of experience developing embedded systems for aerospace, robotics, automotive, industrial automation, medical devices, or other safety-critical applications.
- Strong understanding of Embedded Systems, Embedded Firmware Development, ARM Cortex-M Architecture, Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS), Device Drivers, Communication Protocols, Embedded Debugging, Interrupts & DMA, Hardware-Software Integration.
- Strong programming skills in C and C++.
- Experience with STM32 microcontrollers.
- Experience debugging embedded hardware and firmware.
- Experience using laboratory electronic test equipment.
- Strong analytical thinking and structured problem-solving ability.
- Excellent technical communication and documentation skills.

- Ability to work in a fast-paced startup environment where responsibilities evolve with program needs.
- Comfortable working across multiple engineering disciplines and contributing beyond a narrowly defined role.
- Willingness to travel for flight tests, supplier visits, customer meetings, government reviews, conferences, and technical demonstrations as required.
- Ability to work outdoors during integration campaigns, launch operations, and recovery activities under varying weather conditions.
- Comfortable standing, walking, bending, and working for extended periods during hardware integration and testing activities.
- Ability to safely lift and carry engineering equipment and hardware weighing up to 20 kg, with appropriate assistance when required.
- Willingness to occasionally work outside regular business hours during integration campaigns, flight tests, critical milestones, or mission operations.
- Strong commitment to documentation, configuration control, schedule discipline, and maintaining high-quality program records.
- Ability to obtain and maintain any security clearances or background verifications required for defence, strategic, or government-sponsored projects (subject to applicable regulations).
- Demonstrate a strong safety-first mindset and adherence to laboratory, workshop, propulsion, and flight-test safety procedures.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills with the ability to coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams.
