The Lab Technician will be responsible for performing routine and urinalysis tests with accuracy and efficiency, ensuring compliance with NABL/ISO 15189 standards. The role includes sample analysis, quality control, instrument maintenance, and timely reporting.
Key Responsibilities
1. Sample Handling
- Receive, verify, and process urine samples according to laboratory SOPs.
- Check sample identification, labeling, volume, and acceptability.
- Reject unsuitable samples as per rejection criteria and document appropriately.
- Maintain sample traceability throughout the testing process.
2. Urine Analysis
- Perform physical examination of urine including:
- Colour
- Appearance
- Specific Gravity
- Perform chemical analysis using urine dipsticks or automated urine analyzers.
- Validate analyzer flags and troubleshoot abnormal results.
- Repeat tests whenever required to ensure accuracy.
3. Urine Microscopy
- Prepare urine sediments using standardized centrifugation techniques.
- Perform microscopic examination for:
- RBCs
- WBCs (pus cells)
- Epithelial cells
- Casts
- Crystals
- Bacteria
- Yeast cells
- Parasites
- Mucus threads
- Spermatozoa
- Other abnormal findings
- Correctly identify and report clinically significant microscopic findings.
- Escalate unusual or doubtful findings to the senior technologist/pathologist.
4. Quality Control & NABL Compliance
- Run Internal Quality Control (IQC) for hematology and urinalysis
- Maintain QC records, Levy-Jennings charts, and corrective actions
- Follow SOPs and ensure proper documentation
- Participate in External Quality Assurance Programs (EQAS)
- Ensure audit readiness at all times
Skills & Competencies
- Strong knowledge of urine microscopy
- Experience with urine analyzers
- Familiarity with NABL / ISO 15189 standards
- Attention to detail and accuracy
