Job Summary
The Operation Theatre (OT) Technician is responsible for preparing and maintaining the operation theatre, ensuring the availability and functionality of surgical instruments and equipment, assisting the surgical team during procedures, and maintaining a safe, sterile environment in accordance with hospital protocols.
Key ResponsibilitiesPreoperative Responsibilities
- Prepare the operation theatre for scheduled surgeries.
- Arrange and check surgical instruments, equipment, implants, and consumables.
- Ensure OT equipment is functional and report any malfunctions promptly.
- Assist in positioning patients and preparing the operating room before surgery.
- Verify the availability of required surgical supplies and sterile instruments.
- Maintain aseptic and sterile conditions throughout OT preparation.
Intraoperative Responsibilities
- Assist surgeons, anesthetists, and nursing staff during surgical procedures.
- Operate and monitor OT equipment, including surgical lights, suction units, electrocautery machines, and patient monitoring devices.
- Ensure timely availability of instruments and supplies during surgery.
- Maintain cleanliness and sterility of the operating environment.
- Assist in handling surgical specimens according to hospital protocols.
Postoperative Responsibilities
- Clean and prepare the operation theatre for subsequent procedures.
- Ensure proper cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization of surgical instruments.
- Coordinate with the Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) for sterilization processes.
- Dispose of biomedical waste according to hospital policies and regulatory guidelines.
- Maintain OT inventory and report shortages of supplies and equipment.
Equipment & Inventory Management
- Perform routine checks of OT equipment and accessories.
- Maintain inventory of surgical instruments, consumables, and implants.
- Assist in preventive maintenance and calibration of OT equipment.
- Report equipment defects and coordinate repairs.
Infection Prevention & Safety
- Follow infection prevention and control protocols.
- Maintain strict aseptic and sterile techniques.
- Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Adhere to biomedical waste management guidelines.
- Support compliance with hospital quality and patient safety standards.
Documentation
- Maintain OT registers and equipment checklists.
- Record sterilization logs and inventory usage.
- Assist in maintaining surgical procedure documentation as required.
Qualifications
- Diploma or B.Sc. in Operation Theatre Technology (OTT) or a related allied health science program from a recognized institution.
Experience
- Preferred: 1–3 years of experience as an Operation Theatre Technician in a multispecialty hospital.
