Job Title: NICU Staff Nurse (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Nurse)
Job Summary
The NICU Staff Nurse is responsible for providing specialized nursing care to critically ill or premature newborn infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The nurse works collaboratively with neonatologists, pediatricians, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal outcomes for neonates and support for their families.
Key Responsibilities
1. Patient Care
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for critically ill or premature newborns.
- Monitor vital signs, oxygen saturation, ventilator settings, and other life-support equipment.
- Administer medications, IV fluids, blood products, and nutrition (including TPN).
- Assist in emergency procedures and resuscitation of neonates.
- Provide pre- and post-operative care for neonatal surgical patients.
2. Clinical Monitoring & Documentation
- Continuously monitor neonates for changes in condition.
- Accurately document assessments, interventions, and patient progress.
- Maintain compliance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.
3. Family Support & Education
- Educate parents and caregivers about infant care, breastfeeding, and discharge instructions.
- Provide emotional support and counseling to families during critical situations.
- Encourage parental involvement in neonatal care.
4. Infection Control & Safety
- Adhere to strict infection control protocols.
- Ensure safe handling of equipment and medications.
- Maintain a clean and safe NICU environment.
5. Collaboration
- Work closely with neonatologists, pediatric specialists, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Participate in patient rounds and case discussions.
- Assist in quality improvement initiatives.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Diploma in Nursing (as per institutional requirement).
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification (required).
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification (preferred).
