Level 3 NICU staff nurses provide comprehensive, around-the-clock critical care to extremely premature (<28-32 weeks) or critically ill newborns. Key duties include managing advanced respiratory support (ventilators), administering IV medications/nutrition, monitoring vital signs, and operating specialized equipment. They are highly skilled professionals who collaborate with neonatologists, perform procedures, and educate families.
Core Job Responsibilities:
- Critical Care Delivery: Provide intensive, individualized care for premature and high-risk infants.
- Respiratory Management: Manage ventilators, CPAP, and monitor oxygen levels, including for infants born at 28 weeks or less.
- Medical Procedures & Interventions: Insert IV lines, administer medications and fluids, perform blood tests (e.g., heel pricks), and manage phototherapy.
- Monitoring & Assessment: Constantly assess vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation) and recognize subtle changes in condition.
- Support & Education: Offer emotional support, educate parents on care, and promote bonding.
- Documentation & Coordination: Maintain detailed electronic records, coordinate care with specialists (neonatologists, respiratory therapists), and maintain strict infection control.
- Leadership & Development: Participate in staff orientation, precepting, and evidence-based practice improvements.
Required Qualifications & Skills:
- Experience: Previous experience in a NICU environment, specifically level II or III.
- Skills: Exceptional critical thinking, proficiency with high-tech monitoring equipment, and strong communication skills for family support.
