Job Description (JD) – Microsoft SQL Server Administrator (MSSQL) L3 Job Title Senior Microsoft SQL Server Administrator (MSSQL L3) Experience Level L3 / Senior Database Administrator Job Summary The MSSQL L3 Administrator is responsible for the design, implementation, optimization, security, and high availability of Microsoft SQL Server environments. The role serves as the highest level of technical escalation for database-related issues and provides leadership in database architecture, performance tuning, disaster recovery, automation, and enterprise database governance. Key Responsibilities Database Architecture & Administration Design, deploy, and manage enterprise-scale SQL Server environments. Lead SQL Server installation, configuration, migration, and upgrade activities. Develop database standards, best practices, and governance policies. Perform capacity planning and infrastructure optimization. Performance Tuning & Optimization Analyze and optimize complex SQL queries, procedures, and database structures. Troubleshoot performance bottlenecks involving CPU, memory, storage, and network resources. Review execution plans and implement indexing strategies. Conduct proactive database health checks and performance assessments. High Availability & Disaster Recovery Design and manage Always On Availability Groups, Failover Clustering, Log Shipping, Replication, and Disaster Recovery solutions. Develop and test DR plans and business continuity procedures. Perform regular failover and recovery validation exercises. Ensure Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) are met. Database Security & Compliance Implement database security frameworks and access management controls. Conduct database audits and vulnerability assessments. Ensure compliance with organizational, regulatory, and security requirements. Manage encryption technologies such as TDE and SSL/TLS. Incident & Problem Management Act as the final technical escalation point for critical database incidents. Perform root cause analysis (RCA) and implement preventive measures. Support Major Incident Management (MIM) activities. Ensure SLA adherence and minimize service disruptions. Automation & Process Improvement Develop automation scripts using PowerShell, T-SQL, and SQL Agent Jobs. Automate database monitoring, maintenance, and reporting activities. Drive continuous improvement and operational excellence initiatives. Support DevOps and Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) practices where applicable. Cloud & Modernization Manage and support Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and hybrid database environments. Participate in database modernization and cloud migration projects. Evaluate and implement new SQL Server features and technologies. Documentation & Leadership Create and maintain architecture diagrams, SOPs, and operational runbooks. Mentor L1 and L2 database administrators. Provide technical guidance to application, infrastructure, and project teams. Participate in solution design and technical review discussions.
