Job Description (JD) – Conventional VTL Operator (Valve & Defence Components)
Position: Conventional VTL (Vertical Turret Lathe) Operator
Department: Production – Machine Shop Division
Industry: Machining – Valve & Defence Components
Reports To: Production Supervisor / Shop Floor In-charge
Location: Machine Shop Division
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and operate conventional VTL machines for machining valve and defence components.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, process sheets, and machining instructions.
- Perform facing, boring, turning, grooving, drilling, and threading operations as per specifications.
- Select appropriate cutting tools, inserts, fixtures, and measuring instruments.
- Monitor machining parameters such as speed, feed, and depth of cut.
- Inspect components using measuring instruments such as Vernier calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, height gauges, dial indicators, and inside/outside micrometers.
- Maintain dimensional accuracy, surface finish, and geometric tolerances as per drawing requirements.
- Record production, inspection, and machine maintenance data.
- Perform routine machine cleaning and basic preventive maintenance.
- Report machine abnormalities, tooling issues, and quality deviations to the supervisor.
- Ensure proper handling and identification of materials and finished components.
- Follow 5S, safety procedures, PPE requirements, and company quality standards.
- Support continuous improvement and productivity initiatives.
Educational Qualification
- ITI (Turner/Machinist) or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
- Equivalent technical qualification with relevant experience will also be considered.
Experience
- Minimum: 3–5 years in operating Conventional VTL machines.
- Experience in machining valve bodies, valve bonnets, flanges, rings, or defence components is preferred.
Technical Skills
- Ability to read engineering drawings and GD&T.
- Knowledge of machining parameters and cutting tools.
- Experience with large-diameter component machining.
- Understanding of machining allowances and tolerances.
- Ability to use precision measuring instruments.
- Knowledge of work holding and fixture setting.
- Basic knowledge of material grades such as Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel, Alloy Steel, Duplex, Super Duplex, and defence-grade alloys.
Quality Requirements
- Produce components within specified dimensional tolerances.
- Follow inspection plans and quality procedures.
- Ensure traceability of components and production records.
- Minimize rejection and rework.
- Comply with ISO 9001:2015 quality requirements.
Safety Responsibilities
- Wear prescribed PPE at all times.
- Follow machine safety procedures and safe lifting practices.
- Maintain a clean and organized workplace (5S).
- Report unsafe conditions, near misses, and accidents immediately.
- Follow company EHS and ISO safety procedures.
