He Waka Eke Noa Scholarship. It is designed to support talented people from Māori and Pasifika backgrounds and help drive innovation and inspiration in our industry.
Rooted in the whakataukī “He Waka Eke Noa” (we are all in this together), this scholarship is designed for Māori and Pasifika students who would benefit from financial assistance, have an interest in the built environment and are keen to make their mark in the world of engineering.

We don’t expect you to know everything right off the bat—instead, you’ll be learning alongside our experienced team, and growing your skills from day one. He Waka Eke Noa Scholarship (Aotearoa New Zealand) Rooted in the whakataukī “He Waka Eke Noa”, this scholarship is designed for Māori and Pasifika students requiring financial assistance who actively promote diversity and inclusivity and demonstrate a sense of shared responsibility for the engineering community and built environment.
Scholarship
The recipient of this scholarship will receive $5,000 to be used in support of their studies. The payment can be used for tuition, books, or equipment required for study.
Internship
The winner of the He Waka Eke Noa Scholarship is eligible for a paid internship for the duration of 12 weeks in one of our NZ office locations – Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, or Christchurch. The internship is optional and not a requirement of the scholarship.
Please make sure you provide information on what location you’d like to be based for your internship. We’re considering interns in Auckland, Hamilton Wellington, and Christchurch.

Eligibility Criteria:
Applicants must be NZ citizens or permanent residents and either entering or currently studying towards an engineering degree.
Ensure to include the following information:
- An up-to-date CV/cover Letter
- Academic Transcript
A one-page written document detailing:
1. Why are you interested in engineering and how will the financial assistance benefit you?
2. Tell us a bit about yourself, what’s important to you, and what taking up this opportunity would mean to you?
Application Process:
- Submission of Application: Candidates are required to submit an application outlining the following areas:
- How the financial assistance would be of benefit
- In what way their lived experience contributes to the development of an enhanced engineering industry, community engagement.
- Their passion for engineering, and how they believe diversity, equity, and inclusion contributes to successful engineering outcomes.
- Holmes Panel Review: A panel at Holmes will review applications and focus on the candidate’s unique strengths and qualities. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews.
- Interview and award: Interviews will emphasise the celebration of diversity, encouraging candidate to share their enthusiasm and unique perspectives. The scholarship will be awarded to exceptional candidate who align with Holmes’ commitment to foster and promote diversity of thought.
