Trauma Surgery OT Scrub Nurse / Scrubber – Nailing & Plating Job Description
A Trauma OT Scrub Nurse (Scrubber) assists orthopedic surgeons during trauma surgeries such as interlocking nailing, plating, external fixation, DHS, PFN, ORIF procedures, and fracture fixation surgeries. The scrub nurse maintains a sterile field, prepares orthopedic instruments and implants, and supports the surgical team throughout the procedure.
Main Duties and ResponsibilitiesPre-Operative Responsibilities
- Prepare the operation theatre for trauma and orthopedic surgeries.
- Arrange sterile instruments, implants, power tools, drills, saws, plates, screws, nails, and fixation sets.
- Check sterility indicators and ensure all orthopedic trays are complete.
- Verify patient identity, consent, surgical site, and OT checklist.
- Assist in patient positioning for orthopedic procedures (supine, lateral, traction table, etc.).
- Prepare C-arm/X-ray equipment and ensure availability of implants and consumables.
Intra-Operative Responsibilities
- Maintain strict sterile technique during surgery.
- Assist orthopedic surgeon during:
- Interlocking nailing
- Tibia/Femur nailing
- PFN (Proximal Femoral Nail)
- DHS plating
- ORIF plating procedures
- External fixation
- Trauma fracture fixation surgeries
- Pass instruments, implants, screws, plates, reamers, guidewires, drill bits, and sutures to surgeon.
- Handle orthopedic power instruments safely.
- Anticipate surgeon’s needs during surgery.
- Perform sponge, needle, and instrument counts with circulating nurse.
- Monitor sterile field and prevent contamination.
- Handle specimens correctly if required.
Post-Operative Responsibilities
- Complete final instrument and sponge count.
- Assist in wound dressing and patient transfer to recovery room.
- Clean and arrange orthopedic instrument sets for sterilization.
- Document implants used, surgery details, and OT records.
- Prepare OT for next trauma case.
Skills Required
- Knowledge of orthopedic trauma instruments and implants.
- Understanding of nailing and plating procedures.
- Infection control and aseptic techniques.
- Team coordination and communication skills.
- Ability to work in emergency trauma surgeries.
- Knowledge of C-arm handling and orthopedic equipment.
