ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for a passionate and student-centered School Career Counselor to support students in Grades 9 through 12 as they explore academic pathways, career interests, and post-secondary opportunities. The counselor will serve as a trusted guide — helping students gain self-awareness, set goals, and make informed decisions about their futures.
This role goes beyond advising — it involves building relationships with students, families, teachers, and external partners to create a holistic career development experience embedded in school life.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Career Exploration & Student Guidance
- Conduct one-on-one and small group career counselling sessions with students in Grades 9–12
- Help students identify their strengths, interests, values, and learning styles using age-appropriate assessments
- Guide students in exploring careers aligned with their academic interests and personal goals
- Introduce students to diverse career pathways including vocational, technical, and professional tracks
- Support students with subject/stream selection (e.g., Science, Commerce, Arts) in alignment with career goals
Academic & Post-Secondary Planning
- Advise students on course selection, electives, and academic planning from Grade 9 onward
- Provide guidance on college/university applications, entrance exams, and admission requirements
- Support students exploring scholarships, financial aid, apprenticeships, and gap year options
- Facilitate college visits, alumni talks, and higher education awareness sessions
- Assist Grade 12 students with applications, personal statements, and transition planning
Career Development Programs
- Design and deliver age-appropriate career education sessions, workshops, and seminars
- Organize career fairs, industry panels, job shadowing, and internship experiences
- Coordinate with employers, professionals, and alumni to provide exposure to real-world careers
- Introduce students to tools such as career assessments, interest inventories, and labour market resources
- Help students build early professional skills — resume writing, communication, and goal-setting
Stakeholder Collaboration
- Partner with teachers to integrate career awareness into classroom learning
- Engage parents and guardians through counselling sessions, workshops, and progress updates
- Liaise with external organizations, universities, and industry partners for career programming
- Refer students to additional support services (mental health, special needs, academic support) as needed
Records, Reporting & Professional Practice
- Maintain confidential student records, session notes, and career portfolios
- Track and report on student outcomes, program effectiveness, and counselling metrics
- Stay current with trends in career development, education policy, and labour markets
- Participate in school committees, staff meetings, and professional development activities
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Counselling, Psychology, Education, or a related field (required)
- Master's degree in School Counselling, Career Counselling, or Guidance & Counselling (preferred)
- Professional certification or licensure in school/career counselling as required by local regulations
Experience
- 2+ years of experience in school counselling, career guidance, or youth development
- Experience working with adolescents (ages 14–18) in an educational or community setting
- Demonstrated experience delivering career education programs or workshops
Knowledge & Skills
- Solid understanding of adolescent development, career theories, and counselling ethics
- Familiarity with post-secondary pathways: higher education, vocational training, and professional certifications
- Proficiency with career assessment tools (e.g., Holland Codes, MBTI, Strong Interest Inventory)
- Strong interpersonal and active listening skills; ability to build trust with young people
- Excellent communication skills for engaging students, parents, and school staff
- Organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage a high caseload effectively
- Proficiency with school information systems and digital tools (Google Workspace, MS Office, career platforms)
