Job Description (JD) – NPD Engineer (Valve & Défense Components)
Department: New Product Development (NPD)

Reports To: NPD Manager / Engineering Manager
Location: Manufacturing Plant
Key Responsibilities
1. New Product Development
- Review customer drawings, specifications, and technical requirements.
- Study manufacturability of valve and defence components.
- Prepare feasibility reports and risk assessments.
- Develop process flow, operation sequence, and manufacturing strategy.
- Coordinate prototype development and validation.
2. Process Engineering
- Prepare process sheets and operation layouts.
- Select machines, cutting tools, fixtures, and gauges.
- Define machining parameters and optimize cycle time.
- Support CNC programming requirements.
3. APQP & Documentation
- Prepare APQP documents wherever applicable.
- Develop Process Flow Diagram (PFD).
- Prepare PFMEA.
- Develop Control Plan.
- Prepare Work Instructions and SOPs.
- Maintain engineering change records.
4. Customer Coordination
- Attend technical discussions with customers.
- Clarify drawing and specification queries.
- Coordinate sample submission and customer approval.
- Support customer audits and technical reviews.
5. Production Support
- Support trial production and pilot batches.
- Resolve machining and process-related issues.
- Improve productivity and reduce manufacturing costs.
- Ensure smooth transfer from development to production.
6. Quality Improvement
- Analyse dimensional issues and root causes.
- Coordinate with Quality for PPAP, FAI, and capability studies.
- Implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Ensure compliance with customer quality standards.
7. Tooling & Fixture Development
- Design or coordinate fixture development.
- Select cutting tools and inserts.
- Optimize tool life and machining performance.
- Coordinate with tooling suppliers.
8. Continuous Improvement
- Reduce cycle time and setup time.
- Improve process capability (Cp/Cpk).
- Reduce rejection and rework.
- Support Lean Manufacturing, Kaizen, and 5S initiatives.

Educational Qualification
- B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering
- Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (with relevant experience) may also be considered.
Experience
- NPD Engineer: 3–8 years in precision machining, valve manufacturing, aerospace, or defense component industries.
- Experience in CNC Turning, VMC, HMC, and multi-axis machining is preferred.
Software Knowledge
- AutoCAD
- SolidWorks / Creo / NX (preferred)
- Mastercam or equivalent CAM software (preferred)
- Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint
Knowledge Requirements
- Precision machining processes
- Valve and defense industry standards
- Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
- Material specifications (SS, Alloy Steel, Inconel, Duplex, Titanium, etc.)

Authority
- Recommend manufacturing processes and tooling.
- Coordinate with customers and suppliers on technical matters.
- Approve process documentation within authorized limits.
- Initiate engineering changes for process improvement.
Working Conditions
- Manufacturing shop floor and engineering office.
- Interaction with customers, suppliers, production, quality, purchase, and maintenance departments.
- Occasional travel for customer meetings, supplier development, or technical support.
This JD is suitable for an ISO 9001:2015 machine shop manufacturing valve and defense components, with responsibility for managing new product development from customer drawing review through successful production launch.
