A Quality Control (QC) Engineer for paint and putty is responsible for ensuring that coating materials and surface preparation processes meet specified quality standards (OEM, ISO, ASTM, or IS codes). These professionals work in manufacturing, construction, or automotive industries to maintain, test, and approve materials and application processes to ensure durability and aesthetic quality. Key Responsibilities
- Raw Material Testing: Inspecting incoming paint, putty, and coating materials for quality compliance.
- In-Process Monitoring: Monitoring the entire painting process, from pre-treatment (blasting) to coating (ED, primer, basecoat, topcoat).
- Surface Preparation QC: Inspecting surfaces for cleanliness and suitability before putty or paint application.
- Performance Testing: Conducting tests on cured samples, including Dry Film Thickness (DFT), adhesion tests, curing time, and scratch resistance.
- Defect Analysis: Identifying and rectifying defects such as runs, sags, orange peel, dust, and pinholes.
- Documentation: Maintaining detailed records, preparing inspection reports, and issuing Work Inspection Requests (WIR).
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Education: B.Sc/M.Sc in Chemistry, or B.E./B.Tech in Paint Technology, Chemical Engineering, or related fields.
- Technical Knowledge: Understanding of industrial paint types, coating application methods, and putty, including cement-based or polymer-based types.
- Certifications: NACE Level 1 or 2 (for coating inspectors) is often preferred, especially in oil & gas or large infrastructure projects.
- Tools: Proficient in using inspection instruments like thickness gauges (Elcometer).
