Histopathology Technician Responsibilities & Duties
- Prepare tissue samples for microscopic examination using various techniques such as fixing, embedding, slicing, and staining.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, including microtomes, tissue processors, and staining stations.
- Ensure all specimens are accurately labelled and documented to maintain proper identification throughout all stages of processing.
- Assist pathologists by preparing slides and performing preliminary examinations of samples when required.
- Follow strict laboratory protocols and safety procedures to prevent contamination and ensure the accuracy of test results.
- Dispose of hazardous materials and biological waste according to safety regulations.
- Manage laboratory supplies by maintaining inventory and ordering necessary materials as needed.
- Conduct quality control checks to ensure the precision and reliability of laboratory tests.
- Participate in continuing education to stay current with the latest techniques and advancements in histopathology.
- Collaborate with other medical and laboratory staff to achieve optimal patient care outcomes.
Histopathology Technician Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science, biology, or a related field.
- Previous experience working in a histopathology or clinical laboratory setting.
- Strong understanding of laboratory safety protocols and procedures.
- Excellent attention to detail and manual dexterity.
- Proficiency in using laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Effective communication and organizational skills.
- In-depth knowledge of histopathological techniques and processes.
- Associate’s degree in medical laboratory technology or a related field.
- Certified Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) credential.
- Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathology.
- Ability to handle and prepare biological samples with precision.
- Strong observational and analytical skills.
- Willingness to adhere to strict ethical and confidentiality guidelines.
- Solid foundation in laboratory safety and hygiene practices.
- Capability to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks.
