Job Summary
The Cath Lab Scrub Nurse is responsible for providing specialized nursing care to patients undergoing diagnostic and interventional cardiovascular procedures. The role involves preparing and maintaining a sterile field, assisting cardiologists and interventional specialists during procedures, ensuring the availability and functionality of equipment and supplies, and delivering safe, high-quality patient care in compliance with hospital policies, infection control standards, and regulatory requirements.
Key ResponsibilitiesClinical Responsibilities
- Prepare the cardiac catheterization laboratory for scheduled and emergency procedures.
- Verify patient identity, consent forms, medical history, allergies, and procedural requirements before the commencement of procedures.
- Establish and maintain a sterile field throughout all procedures.
- Perform surgical hand scrubbing, gowning, and gloving according to aseptic protocols.
- Assist physicians during diagnostic and interventional procedures by anticipating procedural requirements and passing instruments, catheters, guidewires, balloons, stents, and other devices.
- Ensure proper handling, labeling, and accountability of all consumables and implants used during procedures.
- Monitor and maintain sterile techniques to prevent healthcare-associated infections.
- Collaborate with the circulating nurse and radiology technologists to ensure smooth procedural workflow.
- Participate in patient preparation, positioning, draping, and post-procedure care as required.
- Assist in emergency situations, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation and management of complications.
- Ensure accurate documentation of procedural details, equipment used, and patient records.
Equipment and Inventory Management
- Check the functionality and readiness of all Cath Lab equipment before each procedure.
- Ensure adequate stock levels of catheters, guidewires, sheaths, stents, balloons, contrast media, and other consumables.
- Report equipment malfunctions and coordinate timely maintenance and repairs.
- Monitor inventory usage and assist in maintaining cost-effective utilization of resources.
- Ensure proper storage and handling of sterile supplies and equipment.
Infection Prevention and Safety
- Adhere to infection control policies and universal precautions.
- Follow radiation safety protocols and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Ensure compliance with biomedical waste segregation and disposal guidelines.
- Maintain a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
Quality and Compliance
- Comply with hospital policies, accreditation standards, and departmental protocols.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, audits, and continuing education programs.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and uphold ethical and professional standards.
- Participate in departmental meetings, drills, and competency assessments.

- Coronary angiography
- Coronary angioplasty (PTCA/PCI)
- Primary angioplasty for acute myocardial infarction
- Temporary and permanent pacemaker implantation
- Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implantation
- Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) procedures
- Peripheral angiography and interventions
- Electrophysiology studies and ablation procedures
- Intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) insertion
- Structural heart interventions, as applicable
Qualifications
- Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) or B.Sc. Nursing from a recognized institution.
- Valid nursing registration with the respective State Nursing Council.
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
Experience
- Minimum 2–5 years of clinical nursing experience, with at least 1–2 years of experience in a Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory preferred.
- Experience in assisting with diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures is desirable.
Knowledge and Skills
- Comprehensive knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology, and cardiovascular procedures.
- Strong understanding of sterile techniques and infection prevention practices.
- Familiarity with Cath Lab equipment, instruments, and consumables.
- Knowledge of radiation safety principles.
- Excellent critical thinking, communication, and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work effectively in high-pressure and emergency situations.
- Strong organizational and documentation skills.
Working Conditions
- Rotational shifts, including night duties, weekends, and public holidays.
- On-call availability for emergency procedures.
- Exposure to radiation, blood, body fluids, and other clinical hazards, with appropriate safety measures in place.
