POSITION OVERVIEW
We are seeking a seasoned Associate Manager — Database Engineering to lead a high-performing team of database developers and technical leads responsible for delivering enterprise-scale database solutions, data platforms, and analytics infrastructure. The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise in database architecture and cloud data platforms with the people leadership, strategic thinking, and delivery management skills required to run a team, govern quality, and align database engineering with broader business and technology objectives.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
-
Lead and manage a team of database developers and technical leads — including hiring, performance management, goal setting, and career development.
-
Own end-to-end delivery of database engineering workstreams across DEV, QA, and Production environments.
-
Define and drive the database engineering strategy, architecture standards, and technology roadmap.
-
Architect and govern enterprise-scale database solutions — relational, columnar, cloud-native, and hybrid environments.
-
Lead database platform modernisation initiatives — cloud migration, schema refactoring, and performance transformation programmes.
-
Define and enforce data governance, security, compliance, data quality, and referential integrity standards.
-
Partner with Data Engineering, BI, Data Science, Architecture, and Business teams to align database solutions with business goals.
-
Implement and govern DataOps/DevOps practices: automated schema deployment, CI/CD pipelines, testing frameworks, and monitoring.
-
Translate complex business and analytics requirements into scalable, maintainable, and cost-effective database designs.
-
Manage project timelines, resource allocation, risks, and senior stakeholder communications for database workstreams.
-
Lead technical and design reviews — architecture boards, code reviews, and solution approvals.
-
Continuously evaluate and introduce database technologies, frameworks, and tooling to improve team capability and delivery efficiency.
-
Support real-time, streaming, and event-driven database patterns to enable analytics and ML workloads.
-
Drive cost optimisation strategies for cloud-hosted database platforms.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
-
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field.
-
10+ years of experience in database development and architecture roles.
-
Minimum 2–3 years of people management or team leadership experience.
-
Expert proficiency in T-SQL / PL-SQL across multiple platforms — SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and cloud equivalents.
-
Proven track record delivering enterprise database solutions on Azure SQL, Azure Synapse, Snowflake, or AWS Redshift.
-
Deep expertise in data modelling — relational, dimensional, and cloud-native patterns at enterprise scale.
-
Advanced database performance engineering — query optimization, statistics management, index strategies, and partitioning.
-
Strong background in database CI/CD, DevOps/DataOps, schema versioning, and deployment governance.
-
Demonstrated ability to manage and develop high-performing technical teams.
-
Excellent leadership, communication, and executive stakeholder management skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
-
Cloud certification at professional or expert level — Azure Database Administrator, AWS Database Specialty, or equivalent.
-
Hands-on experience with Databricks SQL, Delta Lake, or Lakehouse architectures.
-
Exposure to NoSQL databases — Cosmos DB, MongoDB, or Cassandra — at production scale.
-
Experience with data governance platforms, data lineage tools, and observability frameworks.
-
Knowledge of real-time and streaming database patterns — CDC, event sourcing, Kafka integration.
-
Familiarity with FinOps and cloud cost optimisation practices for database workloads.
-
Experience with Agile delivery frameworks (Scrum, SAFe) and programme-level governance.
-
Exposure to Power BI, DAX, and semantic layer design for enterprise reporting.
