Job Title: Fire Sprinkler Designer
Job Summary
A Fire Sprinkler Designer is responsible for the design, layout, and documentation of fire sprinkler systems for commercial, industrial, and institutional projects. This role develops accurate, constructible design packages, including shop drawings, hydraulic calculations, permit submittals, and BIM-coordinated models, while collaborating closely with project management, field operations, and trade teams to ensure efficient project delivery.
Important Candidate Requirements
- Hands-on experience with AutoSPRINK is strongly preferred. Candidates without AutoSPRINK experience should have a solid background in fire sprinkler design and demonstrate the ability to learn the software quickly.
- Experience working in a BIM-driven environment is highly preferred, including Revit and/or Navisworks for coordination and clash detection.
- Candidates should have direct experience in fire sprinkler system design rather than only fire alarm, clean agent, or gas suppression system design.
- Knowledge of NFPA standards, especially NFPA 13, is essential.
- NICET Water-Based Systems Layout Certification (Level I-IV) is preferred but not mandatory. Candidates willing to pursue certification and develop their sprinkler design expertise are encouraged to apply.
Key Responsibilities
- Review architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical drawings, specifications, and contract documents to develop coordinated fire sprinkler designs.
- Design wet, dry, preaction, and other water-based fire sprinkler systems in compliance with NFPA 13, NFPA 14, NFPA 20, IBC, FM Global guidelines, and applicable state and local codes.
- Prepare shop drawings, design layouts, hydraulic calculations, and material listings using AutoSPRINK, Revit, AutoCAD, or comparable design platforms.
- Develop permit submittals and supporting documentation for review by Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
- Coordinate with project managers, fabrication teams, field personnel, and trade partners to improve constructability and installation efficiency.
- Participate in BIM coordination meetings, clash detection, and model reviews using Revit and Navisworks, where required.
- Incorporate revisions based on field conditions, internal QA/QC reviews, client feedback, and code review comments.
- Provide design support throughout fabrication, installation, inspection, commissioning, and project closeout.
Required Skills & QualificationsEducation
- Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
Experience
- 3–6 years of experience in Fire Sprinkler System Design, drafting, or fire protection layout.
- Strong working knowledge of NFPA 13, NFPA 14, NFPA 20, IBC, FM Global guidelines, and applicable local codes.
- Experience using AutoSPRINK is highly preferred.
- Proficiency in Revit, Navisworks, AutoCAD, or similar design software.
- Experience working on BIM-coordinated projects is highly desirable.
- Ability to prepare hydraulic calculations, shop drawings, and coordinated design packages.
- Strong understanding of construction drawings and multidisciplinary coordination.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
- NICET Water-Based Systems Layout Certification is preferred.
- Experience designing fire sprinkler systems for North American commercial or industrial projects.
- Familiarity with fabrication-ready shop drawings and permit documentation.
- Exposure to BIM workflows and multidisciplinary coordination.
- Candidates with a strong fire sprinkler design background but limited AutoSPRINK experience will be considered if they demonstrate the ability to quickly adapt and learn.
