Embedded Systems Engineer – Hardware & Firmware (R&D)
Location: Bengaluru
Experience: 10+ Years
Employment Type: Full-time
About the Role
We are looking for a hands-on Embedded Systems Engineer to join our R&D team. This is a highly technical role for an engineer who can work across hardware and firmware, taking products from concept and prototyping through PCB design, firmware development, system integration, testing, and debugging.
The role involves working on diverse projects ranging from cost-sensitive consumer products to high-performance industrial systems, requiring strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and a practical engineering mindset.
Key Responsibilities
Hardware & PCB Development
- Design schematics and multi-layer PCBs using KiCad.
- Take concepts from breadboard/prototype stage to a fully routed and production-ready PCB.
- Design and integrate power, motor-driver, sensor-conditioning, and analog circuits.
- Select components based on project requirements, cost, performance, and reliability.
Firmware Development
- Develop and maintain embedded firmware using C/C++.
- Work with microcontrollers including STM32, STM8, ATtiny, ATmega, PIC16F, ESP8266, and ESP32.
- Implement and work with bootloaders, DFU, and other firmware programming mechanisms.
System Integration & Communication
- Implement and debug CAN, MQTT, BLE, SPI, UART, I2C, and USB.
- Integrate displays such as TFT, OLED, and LCD, along with input devices and storage solutions such as SD cards and memory ICs.
- Work with software teams to define communication protocols and API structures for server connectivity.
Testing & Debugging
- Perform complete board bring-up, hardware validation, and firmware debugging.
- Troubleshoot using oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, DMMs, and other laboratory equipment.
- Identify and resolve hardware, firmware, power, and communication issues.
Technical Requirements
- Strong hands-on experience with Embedded Systems and Firmware Development.
- Strong knowledge of STM32, including bootloaders and DFU.
- Experience with STM8, ATtiny, ATmega, PIC, ESP8266, and/or ESP32 is highly valuable.
- Proficiency in C and C++; working knowledge of Python for tooling and automation.
- Experience with KiCad or equivalent PCB design tools.
- Ability to design, prototype, debug, and integrate complete embedded systems.
- Strong understanding of communication protocols such as CAN, SPI, I2C, UART, USB, BLE, and MQTT.
- Experience with power electronics, analog circuits, sensors, displays, and storage interfaces is preferred.
What We Are Looking For
We are looking for an engineer who is:
- Hands-on and technically strong, with the ability to work across hardware and firmware.
- Adaptable, and comfortable moving between different technologies and project requirements.
- Analytical and detail-oriented, particularly when dealing with signal integrity, power management, and debugging.
- Creative and solution-oriented, with the ability to develop solutions when conventional approaches don't work.
- Comfortable working with ambiguity and incomplete requirements.
- Curious and proactive about researching new technologies, components, and unconventional approaches.
R&D Mindset
At PMA, our R&D work goes beyond implementing existing solutions. We build products and solutions that may not have an obvious or readily available answer.
We are looking for engineers who approach “Does not exist” as a technical challenge—not an excuse.
You should be comfortable experimenting, testing assumptions, learning from failures, and applying first-principles thinking to develop practical solutions where standard approaches or documentation fall short.
