Software developer - Java - API development
Company: NWORX.AI | Location: Bangalore, India (Remote)
About Us nWorx builds enterprise-grade voice AI products powered by our proprietary orchestration layer. Our solutions are deployed across large enterprises, educational institutions, and government-affiliated skilling centers, currently supporting over 50,000 Daily Active Users (DAUs). We operate at the intersection of complex backend engineering and deep AI infrastructure, handling real-time voice animation, image streaming, and large-scale LLM/TTS/ASR integration.
The Role We are seeking a Software Engineer for our API and Platform team who thrives in high-ownership environments and is eager to solve difficult technical problems at scale. In this role, you will not simply execute granular tasks; you will take ownership of end-to-end features, contribute to architectural decisions, and actively learn how to design complex systems.
Because our product is deeply integrated with AI, this is a hybrid role. While you will leverage your Java and Spring expertise to build scalable APIs and manage high-throughput Kafka streams, you are also expected to spend 30-40% of your time working directly with our AI orchestration infrastructure. This includes optimizing prompt pipelines for accuracy, managing variance, reducing hallucination rates, and eliminating latency at scale through adversarial testing in production.
Key Responsibilities
- Ownership & Execution: Take ownership of engineering epics and features lasting 1-2 weeks, driving them from technical design through to production deployment with guidance from senior engineers.
- Backend Engineering: Build and scale complex, high-performance APIs using Java and Spring. Manage high-throughput event streaming with Kafka, implement CQRS patterns, and handle heavy asynchronous processing.
- DevOps & Infrastructure: Containerize applications using Docker and participate in the operational lifecycle of our services.
- AI Orchestration & Testing: Dedicate 30-40% of your bandwidth to developing and refining the backend infrastructure for AI. Build and run adversarial pipelines to test LLM accuracy, variance, hallucination rates, and latency under brutal, high-stakes production scenarios.
- Platform Integration: Work directly with our proprietary orchestrator, integrating and optimizing TTS, ASR, and LLM components to ensure seamless data flow.
- Architecture & Quality: Go the extra mile to surface and implement the right architecture. Write strong test cases, ship clean code, and maintain a high bar for engineering quality.
- Product Engineering: Apply a product-minded approach, leveraging engineering spikes and R&D to drive new product improvements and features.
Technical Environment
- Core: Java, Spring Boot, Microservices
- Data & Streaming: Kafka, high-throughput async processing, CQRS patterns
- DevOps: Docker, CI/CD pipelines
- Integrations: Real-time image/voice streaming pipelines, WebSockets
- AI Stack: Custom orchestration layer, TTS, ASR, LLMs, prompt engineering tooling
What We’re Looking For
- 1+ years of backend engineering experience with strong expertise in Java and Spring.
- Proven experience building distributed systems, with hands-on exposure to Kafka, async processing, and event-driven architectures.
- A proven ability to dig deep into complex problems, particularly those related to concurrency, throughput, and scale.
- High standards for code quality, testing, and clean architecture.
- You’re comfortable with Spring’s intricacies—and the idea of debugging an AbstractBeanOrchestratorFactory doesn't scare you.
- A demonstrated readiness to transition into a high-growth startup environment, ready to be mentored and to grow rapidly.
- Intellectual curiosity about AI infrastructure and a willingness to work hands-on with LLMs, prompt optimization, and adversarial testing.
Who This Opportunity Might Be For
- Backend engineers ready to become full-stack AI engineers: You are a strong backend developer who is eager to expand your scope. You are open to being mentored and actively want to grow into a role that bridges core backend infrastructure with AI orchestration.
- High-ownership builders: You want to drive features end-to-end and be recognized as the owner of your domain.
- Engineers with a product mindset: You don't just want to write code; you want to use R&D and technical spikes to directly influence the direction of the product.
Who This Opportunity Might Not Be For To ensure alignment, this role is likely not a fit if:
- You prefer strict task execution: If you prefer being handed granular Jira tickets rather than owning and driving 1-2 week epics end-to-end, this role will not be a good fit.
- You just want to "move fast and break things": We move fast, but we are dealing with enterprise and government infrastructure. We value speed, but we value quality, testing, and clean code equally. If you cut corners on tests, you won't enjoy it here.
- You are strictly a traditional CRUD developer: If your focus is exclusively on standard database-to-API CRUD operations and you have no interest in diving into the underlying AI orchestration, streaming layers, or prompt infrastructure, you will find the 30-40% AI requirement unappealing.
- You dislike AI operational metrics: If you do not want to engage with the operational challenges of production AI (such as measuring hallucination rates, latency, and running adversarial tests), this scope of work will not suit you.
- You prefer low-ambiguity environments: We are a scaling startup dealing with complex, multi-modal AI deployed in government and enterprise environments. If you prefer highly predictable, low-ambiguity work with no operational friction, this environment may be challenging.
