Job Summary
The Ward Staff Nurse is responsible for providing comprehensive, compassionate, and evidence-based nursing care to admitted patients. The role includes patient assessment, medication administration, monitoring clinical progress, maintaining accurate documentation, coordinating with consultants and multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring patient safety throughout hospitalization.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality nursing care to patients admitted to the ward in accordance with hospital policies and nursing standards.
- Assess patients on admission and perform regular monitoring of vital signs, pain scores, intake/output, and overall clinical condition.
- Administer medications, intravenous fluids, injections, blood products, and treatments as prescribed by the treating physician.
- Prepare patients for diagnostic tests, surgical procedures, and specialist consultations.
- Assist doctors during ward rounds and implement prescribed treatment plans promptly.
- Maintain accurate nursing documentation, medication administration records, nursing notes, and patient charts.
- Monitor patients for any changes in condition and immediately report deterioration to the treating consultant and Ward In-Charge.
- Perform wound dressing, catheter care, IV cannulation assistance, nasogastric tube care, oxygen therapy, and other nursing procedures within the scope of practice.
- Ensure adherence to infection prevention and control protocols, including hand hygiene and biomedical waste management.
- Educate patients and their attendants regarding medications, diet, discharge instructions, and follow-up care.
- Coordinate with Pharmacy, Laboratory, Radiology, Physiotherapy, Dietary Services, and other departments to facilitate patient care.
- Ensure safe handling, storage, and administration of medications.
- Maintain cleanliness and readiness of patient care areas and nursing equipment.
- Participate in patient admission, transfer, and discharge processes.
- Ensure proper handover during shift changes using standardized communication protocols.
- Report incidents, medication errors, patient falls, equipment malfunctions, and safety concerns through the hospital reporting system.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, infection control audits, nursing education programs, and mandatory hospital training.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and uphold professional ethics at all times.
Qualifications
- GNM or B.Sc. Nursing from a recognized institution.
- Valid State Nursing Council Registration.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is mandatory.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is desirable.
Experience
- Minimum – 0-3 years of experience in a hospital ward is preferred.
- Freshers may be considered based on hospital requirements.
