Job Description
The Safety Engineer will be responsible for ensuring a safe working environment across the operations and project sites of Sewage Treatment Plants (STP), Effluent Treatment Plants (ETP), Water Treatment Plants (WTP), Demineralization (DM) Plants, and Valve systems.
The role focuses on accident prevention, regulatory compliance, safety training, risk assessment, safety audits, and emergency preparedness to achieve safe and efficient operations with a zero-harm approach.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement and monitor Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) policies across plant operations and project sites.
- Conduct risk assessments, hazard identification, and Job Safety Analysis (JSA) for various plant activities.
- Ensure compliance with applicable Factories Act, Pollution Control Board requirements, OSHA guidelines, and other statutory safety regulations.
- Supervise the safe handling, storage, and use of chemicals, electrical equipment, valves, pipelines, machinery, and other hazardous materials.
- Conduct toolbox talks, safety training, induction programs, and awareness sessions for engineers, operators, technicians, and workers.
- Monitor proper usage of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and enforce safety procedures at project sites.
- Lead incident and accident investigations, prepare reports, identify root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
- Conduct fire drills, mock drills, emergency response exercises, and evacuation drills.
- Inspect high-risk work areas and ensure safety requirements for lifting operations, electrical panels, confined spaces, work at height, hot work, and excavation activities.
- Monitor and implement Permit-to-Work (PTW), Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), and confined-space safety procedures.
- Maintain HSE records, inspection reports, permits, training records, incident reports, and statutory documentation.
- Conduct regular safety inspections and internal HSE audits and follow up on corrective and preventive actions.
- Coordinate with government safety inspectors, clients, consultants, and external auditors during inspections and audits.
Key Skills & Competencies
- Strong knowledge of industrial safety practices in STP, ETP, WTP, DM plants, utilities, and industrial projects.
- Hands-on experience in HIRA, JSA, safety audits, risk assessment, emergency planning, and incident investigation.
- Knowledge of chemical handling, PPE, confined-space entry, LOTO, work-at-height, hot-work, and Permit-to-Work procedures.
- Good understanding of industrial safety standards and statutory compliance requirements.
- Strong observation, analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication, documentation, and safety training skills.
- Ability to work effectively with engineers, technicians, operators, contractors, and site workers.
Eligibility
- B.E / B.Tech / Diploma in Safety Engineering, Industrial Safety, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline.
- NEBOSH / IOSH / Fire & Safety certification will be an added advantage.
- 2–5 years of experience in industrial safety, preferably in STP/ETP/WTP/DM plants, utilities, EPC projects, manufacturing, or heavy industries.
- Candidates with hands-on site safety experience will be preferred.
- Willingness to travel to project sites as required.
