Qualifications & Requirements
· Education: B.Sc. in Nursing or General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM).
· Experience: Typically requires 2 to 4+ years of specialized experience in a cardiovascular operating room.
· Skills: Strong working knowledge of cardiothoracic anatomy, advanced surgical protocols, and high-pressure crisis management.
1. Pre-operative Preparation
- Sterile Field Setup: Perform surgical scrubbing, gowning, and gloving. Organize and prepare specialized CTVS instruments, sutures, and vascular grafts.
- Equipment Check: Ensure heart-lung machines, cardiac monitors, and other critical surgical supplies are fully operational.
- Patient Verification: Confirm patient identity, informed consent, NPO (fasting) status, site marking, and review allergy history
2. Intra-operative Assistance
- Direct Assistance: Stand alongside the surgeon, directly participating in the operation by anticipating needs and passing instruments, clamps, and materials.
- Asepsis Maintenance: Strictly manage the sterile environment to prevent surgical site infections.
- Team Coordination: Work closely with the perfusionist (heart-lung machine operator) and anesthesia team.
3. Safety & Post-operative Duties
- Safety Counts: Conduct meticulous, mandatory counts of sponges, needles, and instruments alongside the circulating nurse.
- Specimen Management: Safely handle, label, and document surgical specimens.
- Patient Transfer: Assist the surgical team in wound dressing and the safe transfer of the patient to the CTVS Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
