Position: Scrub Nurse (Operating Theatre)
Department: Operation Theatre (OT) – Minimally Invasive / Gastro Surgery
Reporting To: OT In-Charge / Chief Surgeon
1. Job Summary
The Scrub Nurse is responsible for maintaining a sterile surgical environment and assisting surgeons during minimally invasive (laparoscopic) gastric procedures. The role includes preparation of instruments, intraoperative assistance, and ensuring patient safety before, during, and after surgery.
2. Key Responsibilities
A. Pre-Operative Duties
- Prepare the operating theatre for scheduled surgeries (laparoscopic and GI procedures).
- Check and arrange sterile instruments, laparoscopic sets, and consumables.
- Verify functionality of OT equipment (laparoscopic towers, insufflators, cautery machines).
- Ensure proper sterilization and aseptic protocols are followed.
- Assist in patient positioning and surgical site preparation.
- Perform surgical counts (instruments, sponges, needles) before the procedure.
B. Intra-Operative Duties
- Assist surgeons during procedures by passing instruments and supplies.
- Maintain strict sterile field throughout surgery.
- Handle laparoscopic instruments (trocar, camera, graspers, etc.) efficiently.
- Anticipate surgeon’s needs during procedures.
- Monitor sterile technique and prevent contamination.
- Maintain accurate surgical counts during the procedure.
C. Post-Operative Duties
- Account for all surgical instruments and materials.
- Assist in wound dressing and patient transfer to recovery room.
- Clean and prepare instruments for sterilization (CSSD coordination).
- Document surgical procedures, counts, and any incidents.
- Ensure OT is cleaned and prepared for next case.
3. Equipment Handling
- Laparoscopic instruments and towers
- Electrosurgical units (cautery machines)
- Suction and irrigation systems
- Sterilization equipment and trays
- Endoscopic cameras and light sources
4. Infection Control & Safety
- Follow strict aseptic and sterile techniques.
- Adhere to hospital infection control policies.
- Use PPE appropriately.
- Ensure biomedical waste segregation as per regulations.
- Participate in OT infection audits and safety drills.
5. Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain OT records, checklists, and patient logs.
- Follow surgical safety protocols (e.g., WHO Surgical Safety Checklist).
- Report any discrepancies, incidents, or equipment malfunction.
- Ensure compliance with hospital accreditation standards (NABH/JCI if applicable).
6. Qualifications & Requirements
- Diploma / B.Sc. Nursing (GNM or B.Sc Nursing)
- Valid Nursing Council Registration
- Certification in OT/Perioperative Nursing preferred
- Minimum 1–3 years experience in OT (preferably laparoscopic/gastro surgery)
7. Skills & Competencies
- Strong knowledge of surgical instruments and OT procedures
- Familiarity with minimally invasive surgical techniques
- Excellent hand-eye coordination and attention to detail
- Ability to work under pressure in emergency situations
- Teamwork and communication skills
- High level of discipline and infection control awareness
8. Physical & Work Requirements
- Ability to stand for long hours during surgeries
- Manual dexterity for handling delicate instruments
- Willingness to work in shifts, including nights and emergencies
9. Additional Responsibilities
- Assist in training junior nurses and OT technicians
- Participate in continuous medical education (CME) programs
- Support inventory management and stock control in OT
Job Types: Full-time, Permanent
Pay: ₹20,000.00 - ₹35,000.00 per month
