Job Description – LOPA Practitioner / Functional Safety Engineer
Provide specialist Process Safety and Functional Safety support for projects and operating assets by facilitating and leading Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA), SIL Determination and Functional Safety assessments in accordance with IEC 61511, IEC 61508 and Santos Process Safety requirements. Support development, verification and lifecycle management of Safety Instrumented Functions (SIFs) and Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS).
Key Responsibilities
Process Safety
- Lead and facilitate LOPA workshops for projects and operating facilities.
- Assess Process Safety risks and identify Independent Protection Layers (IPLs).
- Determine required Risk Reduction Factors (RRF) and SIL targets for Safety Instrumented Functions (SIFs).
- Participate in HAZID, HAZOP, Bowtie and Process Safety Risk Assessments.
- Ensure compliance with IEC 61511 Functional Safety requirements.
- Review Process Safety Basis of Design and Safety Requirement Specifications (SRS).
Functional Safety
- Develop and maintain Functional Safety Lifecycle documentation.
- Define Safety Instrumented Functions (SIFs), SIL Allocation and SIL Assessment reports.
- Prepare and review Safety Requirement Specifications (SRS).
- Support SIS design reviews and Functional Safety Assessments (FSA).
- Verify SIF architecture against IEC 61511 requirements.
SIL Verification
- Perform SIL Verification calculations using exSILentia or equivalent software.
- Verify Probability of Failure on Demand (PFDavg), Risk Reduction Factor (RRF), Architectural Constraints and Systematic Capability.
- Assess proof test intervals, proof test coverage and maintenance assumptions.
- Review reliability data, failure rates and equipment certification requirements.
- Validate SIS performance against target SIL requirements.
Engineering Support
- Review Cause & Effect diagrams, P&IDs, Control Narratives and SIS logic.
- Review instrument datasheets and safety-critical equipment selection.
- Support development of shutdown philosophies and trip matrices.
- Provide technical input to Management of Change (MOC) activities.
- Support commissioning, testing and validation of SIFs and SIS systems.
Asset Support
- Review proof testing strategies and functional test procedures.
- Support periodic SIL reassessment and SIS performance monitoring.
- Investigate SIF demands, spurious trips and process safety incidents.
- Provide recommendations to improve process safety performance and risk reduction.

Experience & Qualifications
Essential
- Degree in Instrumentation, Control Systems, Chemical, Process or Electrical Engineering.
- 10+ years’ experience in Process Safety or Functional Safety, demonstrated experience facilitating LOPA workshops.
- Experience in SIL Determination and SIL Verification, Knowledge of IEC 61511 and IEC 61508.
- Experience using exSILentia, SILver, Isograph or equivalent Functional Safety software.
Preferred
- TÜV Functional Safety Engineer/LOPA Practitioner certification.
- Experience in Oil & Gas, LNG, Gas Processing or Production Facilities.
- Experience with HAZOP, SIS and Process Control Systems.
- Knowledge of Honeywell, Yokogawa, Emerson or Schneider safety systems.
Pay: ₹90,000.00 - ₹150,000.00 per month
