Job Summary
The Electrical & Controls Engineering Specialist is responsible for troubleshooting, maintaining, installing, and optimizing electrical, controls, and industrial automation systems to ensure manufacturing equipment remains safe, reliable, and operational. The role supports automation initiatives, PLC/HMI programming, SCADA integration, preventive maintenance, and continuous improvement projects while ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and operational standards.
Key Responsibilities Electrical Maintenance & Equipment Support
- Perform troubleshooting, repair, installation, testing, and maintenance of electrical systems and manufacturing equipment.
- Support equipment uptime through preventive, predictive, corrective, and emergency maintenance activities.
- Conduct bench testing, debugging, and validation of electrical control systems and software.
- Analyze downtime events and support root cause analysis for equipment failures.
- Maintain clean, safe, and organized work areas in accordance with company standards.
Controls & Automation Engineering
- Develop, modify, test, and maintain PLC and HMI programs using platforms such as Siemens, Mitsubishi, Allen Bradley, Omron, and Fanuc.
- Support SCADA systems, including Ignition SCADA and SQL database integration.
- Integrate automation systems with MES, manufacturing databases, and factory networks.
- Configure and troubleshoot industrial communication protocols including EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, Profibus, and related technologies.
- Install, configure, and maintain sensors, actuators, drives, vision systems, and industrial scanning solutions.
- Support control system upgrades, machine programming, and automation projects.
Continuous Improvement & Manufacturing Support
- Drive automation, productivity, reliability, and cost-reduction initiatives.
- Identify and reduce manufacturing constraints through process improvements and equipment optimization.
- Participate in TPM and continuous improvement activities to enhance safety, quality, and operational performance.
- Prepare technical documentation, project plans, and cost estimates for automation and controls projects.
- Collaborate with production, maintenance, quality, and engineering teams to resolve technical issues and improve manufacturing performance.
Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE)
- Follow all Cummins HSE policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Identify, report, and mitigate workplace hazards.
- Promote a strong safety culture through active participation in safety initiatives and training.
- Ensure safe operation of electrical, controls, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
- Utilize appropriate PPE and follow safe work practices at all times.
Qualifications
- Diploma Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related STEM field.
- Relevant certifications in PLC programming, industrial automation, or electrical systems are advantageous.
- This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.
Skills
- Strong knowledge of electrical systems, controls engineering, and industrial automation.
- PLC/HMI programming and troubleshooting experience (Siemens, Mitsubishi, Allen Bradley, Omron, Fanuc).
- Experience with SCADA platforms, preferably Ignition SCADA.
- Knowledge of MES integration and SQL databases.
- Understanding of industrial communication protocols such as EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, Profibus, and Profinet.
- Experience with safety devices and systems including Safety PLCs, safety relays, scanners, and guarding systems.
- Familiarity with vision systems, scanners, VFDs, servo systems, instrumentation, and industrial networking.
- Strong troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control panel layouts.
- Effective communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills.
Experience
- Minimum 5–10 years of relevant experience in manufacturing, industrial automation, controls engineering, electrical maintenance, or related fields.
- Hands-on experience supporting PLC-based machinery, SCADA systems, factory automation, and manufacturing controls infrastructure.
- Experience with machine programming, factory automation systems, and continuous improvement initiatives preferred.
- Exposure to high-volume manufacturing environments and safety-critical operations is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot complex electrical and automation systems and mentor junior team members when required.
