1. Job Purpose
To assist the Anaesthesiologist in the safe and efficient preparation, administration, monitoring, and completion of anaesthesia procedures, while ensuring that all anaesthesia equipment, drugs, instruments, and emergency supplies are readily available and properly maintained.
2. Key ResponsibilitiesA. Pre-Operative Preparation
- Prepare the anaesthesia workstation, machine, trolley, and required equipment before every procedure.
- Check the anaesthesia machine, oxygen and other gas supplies, breathing circuits, ventilators, suction apparatus, and monitors.
- Ensure availability of required anaesthesia drugs, emergency drugs, syringes, IV sets, airway devices, and consumables.
- Check and arrange endotracheal tubes, laryngoscopes, masks, airways, stylets, bougies, and other airway equipment.
- Ensure that all equipment is clean, functional, and ready for use.
- Assist the Anaesthesiologist in preparing the patient and OT setup.
B. Intra-Operative Assistance
- Assist the Anaesthesiologist during induction, maintenance, and recovery from anaesthesia under appropriate supervision.
- Assist with airway management and provide required equipment as instructed.
- Connect and assist with patient monitoring such as ECG, SpO₂, NIBP, temperature, and other monitors as required.
- Maintain adequate stock and accessibility of anaesthesia drugs and emergency medications.
- Observe equipment and supplies during surgery and immediately report any malfunction or shortage.
- Assist during emergency procedures, resuscitation, and difficult airway management as directed by the Anaesthesiologist.
C. Post-Operative Responsibilities
- Assist in shifting the patient safely from the OT to the recovery area as instructed.
- Ensure availability of required monitoring and oxygen support in the recovery area.
- Assist the Anaesthesiologist during post-anaesthesia recovery and emergency management.
- Clean, disinfect, replenish, and properly store anaesthesia equipment after each procedure.
- Ensure the anaesthesia trolley is fully prepared for the next case.
D. Equipment & Inventory Management
- Maintain anaesthesia equipment in good working condition.
- Perform routine checks of anaesthesia machines, ventilators, monitors, suction machines, laryngoscopes, and other equipment.
- Maintain adequate stock of anaesthesia drugs, consumables, airway devices, and emergency items.
- Check expiry dates of drugs and consumables regularly and report near-expiry/expired items to the concerned In-charge.
- Maintain proper records of equipment checks, drug stocks, and consumable usage as applicable.
- Immediately report equipment breakdowns or technical problems to the concerned authority.
E. Infection Control & Safety
- Follow hospital infection-control policies and OT protocols at all times.
- Ensure proper cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, and storage of reusable instruments and equipment as applicable.
- Follow biomedical waste segregation and disposal procedures.
- Maintain proper hand hygiene and use appropriate PPE.
- Follow all patient-safety and OT safety protocols.
F. Documentation & Coordination
- Assist in maintaining anaesthesia-related records and checklists as required.
- Coordinate with Anaesthesiologists, Surgeons, Nurses, OT staff, CSSD, Pharmacy, and other concerned departments.
- Ensure that all required equipment and consumables are available before starting each procedure.
- Participate in OT meetings, training programmes, audits, and quality-improvement activities when required.
3. Emergency Responsibilities
- Be available for emergency OT procedures and other anaesthesia-related emergencies as assigned.
- Assist the Anaesthesiologist during CPR, resuscitation, airway emergencies, and other critical situations.
- Ensure that the emergency airway trolley, crash cart, suction, oxygen, and other emergency equipment are immediately available and functional.
4. Qualifications
- Diploma / B.Sc. in Anaesthesia Technology, Anaesthesia & Operation Theatre Technology, or equivalent recognized qualification.
- Relevant clinical experience in an Operation Theatre/Anaesthesia Department is preferred.
- Freshers may be considered based on hospital requirements.

- Timely reporting of equipment defects and stock shortages.
- Effective assistance during routine and emergency procedures.
- Proper cleaning, disinfection, and replenishment of equipment after each case.
7. General Duties
- Maintain discipline, punctuality, and professional conduct.
- Follow all hospital policies, SOPs, rules, and instructions issued by Management.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient and hospital information.
- Perform other duties related to the Anaesthesia/OT Department as assigned by the authorized supervisor.
