As a Trainee in an R&D lab, your primary focus is transitioning from textbook chemistry to practical, bench-scale execution. You will generally be responsible for:
- Reaction Setup: Setting up assembly glassware for organic reactions (refluxing, distillations, moisture-sensitive reactions).
- Monitoring & Workup: Tracking reaction progress using TLC (Thin Layer Chromatography) and performing workups (extractions, filtrations) to isolate the target compound.
- Purification: Purifying compounds using crystallization or column chromatography.
- Documentation: Maintaining meticulous laboratory notebooks (LNBs) detailing exact weights, observations, and yields.
- Core Chemistry: Strong understanding of functional group transformations, nucleophilic substitutions, and basic mechanisms.
- Analytical Techniques: Knowing how to interpret basic analytical data—primarily NMR, IR, and Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/GC-MS). You don't need to be an expert interpreter as a trainee, but you should know what a clean product looks like versus starting material.
- Lab Safety: Deep respect for chemical hygiene, handling hazardous reagents (like Pyrophorics or strong acids/bases), and proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).
