Job Summary
The SPDT Engineer is responsible for the programming, setup, operation, and process optimization of Single Point Diamond Turning (SPDT) machines for manufacturing ultra-precision optical components. The role involves producing spherical, aspherical, diffractive, freeform, and infrared optical components while achieving nanometer-level surface finish and micron-level form accuracy. The engineer will also support new product development, process improvement, troubleshooting, and quality assurance.
Key Responsibilities
- Program, set up, and operate SPDT machines (Nanoform, Moore Nanotechnology, Precitech, etc.).
- Manufacture spherical, aspherical, diffractive, and freeform optical components. Perform tool setting, workpiece alignment, and machine calibration.
- Select appropriate cutting parameters to achieve required form accuracy and surface finish.
- Interpret engineering drawings, optical specifications, and CAD models.
- Develop machining processes for prototype and production components.
- Optimize machining cycles to improve productivity and reduce machining time. Troubleshoot machining issues related to form error, surface finish, tool wear, and vibration.
- Coordinate with Design, Quality, Metrology, and Coating departments.
- Conduct first-off inspection and process validation.
- Ensure preventive maintenance and daily health checks of SPDT machines.
- Maintain machining records, process sheets, and work instructions.
- Train operators and junior engineers on SPDT machining techniques.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to quality, productivity, and cost reduction.
- Follow ISO, safety, and cleanroom procedures.
Required Skills
Strong knowledge of ultra-precision machining principles. Experience with SPDT programming and CNC operation. Understanding of optical tolerances, surface roughness, and form accuracy. Knowledge of optical materials such as: Aluminum Copper Electroless Nickel (NiP) Brass Infrared materials (ZnS, Germanium, Silicon) Optical polymers Experience in machining: Spherical optics Aspherical optics Diffractive optics Freeform optics Mirrors Mold inserts Knowledge of diamond cutting tools and tool geometry. Familiarity with optical metrology equipment such as Interferometer, Form Talysurf, Optical Profiler, Roughness Tester, and CMM. Ability to read GD&T and optical drawings. Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
Qualification
Diploma / B.E. in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related discipline.
Experience
3-5 years in Single Point Diamond Turning (SPDT) or Ultra Precision Machining.
Preferred Experience
Experience with Nanoform, Moore Nanotechnology, Precitech, or equivalent ultra-precision machines. Experience in aerospace, defense, infrared optics, semiconductor, or precision optics industries. SPDT is widely used for manufacturing ultra-precision optical components with nanometer-scale surface finishes and sub-micron form accuracy.
