Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to support the development of next-generation automotive turbocharger systems. This role will focus on the aerodynamic, mechanical, and manufacturing design of centrifugal compressors and radial-inflow turbines, from concept through validation.
The ideal candidate has hands-on experience designing automotive turbochargers or closely related turbomachinery products and is comfortable working across aerodynamic design, CFD analysis, structural validation, CAD development, and manufacturing engineering. Candidates should be able to demonstrate previous experience developing turbochargers, compressors, turbines, or other high-speed rotating machinery from concept to production.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and optimize centrifugal compressors and radial-inflow turbines for automotive turbocharger applications.
- Develop compressor covers and turbine housing volutes to achieve target aerodynamic and performance objectives.
- Select and optimize volute area distribution, tongue geometry, and housing A/R ratios to maximize efficiency and operating range.
- Evaluate existing compressor and turbine wheels or develop new wheel designs based on performance requirements.
- Perform CFD simulations to predict mass flow, pressure ratio, efficiency, surge margin, choke flow, and overall operating characteristics.
- Generate and validate compressor and turbine performance maps.
- Conduct structural analysis of rotating components, including stress, modal, fatigue, and overspeed evaluations.
- Develop detailed 3D CAD models of turbocharger housings, wheels, and internal flow-path geometry.
- Design components for casting and machining, producing manufacturing-ready drawings with appropriate GD&T.
- Correlate simulation results with available laboratory or engine test data and refine designs based on findings.
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineering, testing, and manufacturing teams throughout the product development lifecycle.
- Support prototype development, design reviews, and engineering documentation.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience designing automotive turbochargers, centrifugal compressors, turbines, or related turbomachinery.
- Strong experience with CFD simulation for turbomachinery applications.
- Experience with structural analysis tools for rotating equipment, including stress, modal, fatigue, and overspeed analysis.
- Proficiency with 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks, CATIA, Siemens NX, Creo, or similar.
- Strong understanding of compressor and turbine performance mapping.
- Familiarity with prototype development, validation testing, and simulation-to-test correlation.
- Ability to manage multiple engineering projects and meet development timelines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct experience developing production automotive turbochargers for passenger vehicles or commercial vehicles.
- Experience with engine performance testing, turbocharger test rigs, or dynamometer validation.
- Knowledge of high-temperature materials, casting processes, and precision machining for turbomachinery components.
- Experience with FEA software such as ANSYS Mechanical or Abaqus.
- Familiarity with automotive development standards and product validation processes.
