Job Summary
We are seeking a passionate, detail-oriented, and customer-focused Hookah Maker (Hookah Artisan) to join our team. The ideal candidate is someone who views hookah preparation not just as a task, but as a craft. You will be responsible for preparing, assembling, and serving premium hookahs, ensuring optimal flavor profiles, smooth airflow, and excellent heat management.
Beyond technical preparation, you will act as a guide for our guests—helping them navigate our flavor menu, suggesting custom blends, and maintaining an upscale, welcoming atmosphere.
Key Responsibilities1. Preparation & Craftsmanship
- Assemble and prepare hookahs according to standard operating procedures and guest preferences.
- Master flavor mixology; create innovative custom blends and accurately recommend flavor profiles (e.g., sweet, minty, citrus, floral, robust).
- Handle pack density variations (dense, fluff, or semi-dense packs) depending on the tobacco brand (e.g., blonde leaf vs. dark leaf) and bowl type.
- Manage heat effectively using traditional foil or Heat Management Devices (HMDs) to prevent burning and ensure longevity.
2. Guest Experience & Service
- Greet guests warmly and present the hookah and beverage menus.
- Consult with guests to determine their experience level and flavor preferences, tailoring recommendations accordingly.
- Deliver hookahs to tables safely, light the coals, and ensure the hookah is drawing smoothly before handing it over to the guest.
- Conduct regular table checks to rotate, flip, or replace coals, adjusting heat to maintain a premium smoking experience.
3. Hygiene, Maintenance & Safety
- Deconstruct, deeply clean, and sanitize all hookah components (bases, stems, bowls, and hoses) after every use to prevent ghosting (flavor carryover) and maintain strict hygiene standards.
- Safely operate and maintain the coal burner station, ensuring a constant supply of fully lit, red-hot natural coconut coals.
- Adhere to all local fire safety, ventilation, and health department regulations.
- Monitor inventory levels of shisha tobacco, coals, foils, disposable tips, and cleaning supplies, reporting shortages to management.
Qualifications & Skills
- Experience: Minimum of 1 year of experience working as a Hookah Maker in a lounge, bar, or restaurant setting is preferred. Deep personal knowledge of hookah culture and mechanics will also be considered.
- Tobacco Knowledge: Familiarity with major shisha brands, dark leaf vs. blonde leaf characteristics, and different bowl styles (phunnel, Egyptian, etc.).
- Heat Management Skills: Proven ability to manage charcoal to maximize flavor and cloud production without scorching the tobacco.
- Customer Service: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to remain calm, friendly, and attentive in a fast-paced environment.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to stand, walk, and bend for extended periods, and safely carry hot coals and heavy glass hookah bases.
- Age Requirement: Must meet the legal age requirement to handle tobacco products in this jurisdiction (typically 18 or 21+).
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
- Must be comfortable working in a smoke-friendly environment with ambient lighting and music.
- Frequent handling of extremely hot charcoal and specialized heating equipment.
- Flexibility to work late nights, weekends, and holidays.
