Job Description (JD)Position:
Automation / Design Engineer – Manufacturing
Role Purpose
The Automation / Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, implementing, and maintaining automated manufacturing systems and machines. The role focuses on improving productivity, quality, and cost efficiency through effective machine design and automation solutions.
Key ResponsibilitiesAutomation & Controls
- Design, program, and commission PLC-based automation systems
- Develop and integrate HMI/SCADA systems
- Configure and tune servo motors, VFDs, and drives
- Select and integrate sensors, actuators, and control devices
- Troubleshoot automation issues and provide root-cause solutions
- Ensure stable machine operation with minimum downtime
Mechanical & Machine Design
- Design machine mechanisms, jigs, fixtures, and automation modules
- Prepare 2D & 3D CAD drawings and machine layouts
- Perform basic design calculations (motor sizing, torque, speed, load)
- Create and maintain BOMs and technical documentation
- Support machine assembly, trials, and modifications
Electrical Design
- Design control panels and electrical schematics
- Select electrical components as per application & safety norms
- Support panel wiring, testing, and commissioning
- Implement machine safety circuits (E-Stop, interlocks, light curtains)
Manufacturing & Process Improvement
- Understand production processes, cycle time, and bottlenecks
- Improve machine efficiency, yield, and OEE
- Support automation retrofit projects on existing machines
- Reduce rejection, rework, and manual dependency
- Work closely with Production, Quality, and Maintenance teams
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with machine safety and electrical standards
- Conduct basic risk assessments and FMEA
- Promote safe work practices on the shop floor
Documentation & Coordination
- Prepare SOPs, manuals, and commissioning reports
- Coordinate with vendors for machine development & FAT/SAT
- Train operators and maintenance teams on new systems
- Maintain design revisions and change control records
Required Skills & CompetenciesTechnical Skills
- PLC Programming, HMI Development
- CAD Tools: SolidWorks / Creo / AutoCAD
- Pneumatics & basic hydraulics
- Industrial communication protocols
Manufacturing Knowledge
- Production flow and cycle time analysis
- Quality metrics (PPM, rejection, rework)
- OEE, MTBF, MTTR understanding
- Lean / Kaizen basics
Data & Digital Skills (Preferred)
- Machine data logging and analysis
- Excel (pivot tables, charts)
- Industry 4.0 exposure (added advantage)
Soft Skills
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- Good communication and documentation ability
- Cross-functional coordination
- Ability to work in shop-floor and hands-on environment
- Time management and ownership mindset
Qualification
B.E / B.Tech / Diploma in Mechanical / Electrical / Electronics / Mechatronics / Automation
Experience RequirementFresher – 2 Years
Basic automation & design exposure
3 – 6 Years
Independent machine automation & commissioning, standardization & mentoring
