Medical Coding Trainer
Job Summary
We are looking for an experienced and knowledgeable Medical Coding Trainer to deliver training programs in medical coding, healthcare documentation, and coding guidelines. The trainer will be responsible for developing training materials, conducting classroom or virtual sessions, evaluating trainee performance, and ensuring learners develop the skills required for accurate and compliant medical coding.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct training sessions on ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II, and medical coding guidelines.
- Explain medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and disease processes relevant to coding.
- Provide practical training using real-world or simulated medical records and coding scenarios.
- Train participants on coding for various specialties, including E&M, surgery, radiology, pathology, and other specialties.
- Explain official coding guidelines, payer requirements, compliance standards, and coding updates.
- Prepare lesson plans, presentations, assessments, assignments, and practice exercises.
- Evaluate trainee performance through tests, audits, case studies, and practical assessments.
- Identify knowledge gaps and provide individual coaching and feedback.
- Monitor industry and annual coding updates and incorporate changes into training programs.
- Support new-hire training, refresher training, and ongoing competency development.
- Maintain accurate training and performance records.
- Collaborate with coding, quality, audit, and operations teams to identify training needs.
- Promote accuracy, productivity, compliance, and quality in medical coding.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences, Allied Health, Medical, Nursing, or a related field preferred.
- Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, coding systems.
- Good understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and healthcare documentation.
- Relevant medical coding certification such as CPC, CCS, CCA, or equivalent.
- Previous experience in medical coding, auditing, quality, or training.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to simplify complex coding concepts and explain them effectively.
- Proficiency in Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and online training platforms.
Preferred Experience
- 1–3+ years of experience in medical coding, depending on the role level.
- Prior experience as a Medical Coding Trainer, SME, Auditor, or Quality Analyst, Medical Coder.
- Experience training freshers and experienced coding professionals.
- Knowledge of U.S. healthcare, insurance, claims processing, and HIPAA requirements.
- Experience with coding audits, quality metrics, and competency assessments.
