Role Summary
Ecopmin Technologies' Solder Division is looking for a Metallurgical Engineer to own alloy formulation, melting process control, composition verification, and quality assurance for our lead-free solder product range, including SAC305, SAC0307, and related Sn-Ag-Cu alloys, across bar, wire, and paste formats.
The role will ensure that every batch meets IPC J-STD-006 / ISO 9453 composition and impurity specifications before release to customers.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and control alloy melting, master-alloy addition, and homogenization processes for SAC305, SAC0307, and other solder alloys.
- Set and monitor furnace temperature profiles at each stage, including melting, alloying, homogenization, and casting.
- Operate and interpret results from OES (Optical Emission Spectrometer) for composition verification.
- Investigate and correct off-spec batches, including composition drift, segregation, and impurity contamination.
- Conduct root-cause analysis for casting defects such as porosity, shrinkage cavities, dross entrapment, and cracking.
- Establish and maintain QC checklists, batch travelers, and Certificate of Analysis (CoA) documentation.
- Monitor and control impurity elements including Pb, Bi, Sb, Zn, Fe, Al, As, and Cd as per IPC J-STD-006B limits.
- Optimize alloy yield by minimizing dross loss, metal wastage, and rework.
- Support new alloy development and trials for customer-specific grades.
- Coordinate with raw material and master-alloy suppliers regarding incoming material quality.
- Train furnace operators on melting/casting SOPs and safety procedures.
- Maintain melting point (DSC), microstructure, and mechanical property test records.
- Ensure compliance with RoHS, IPC J-STD-006, and ISO 9001 quality systems.
Required Skills & Competencies
- Strong understanding of binary and ternary alloy phase diagrams, specifically the Sn-Ag-Cu system.
- Hands-on experience with induction or resistance melting furnaces.
- Proficiency in OES/spectrometer operation and result interpretation.
- Knowledge of casting defects and troubleshooting, including porosity, segregation, and cold shuts.
- Familiarity with IPC J-STD-006, ISO 9453, and RoHS standards.
- Understanding of master-alloy techniques for Cu/Ag addition into Sn base.
- Basic knowledge of Statistical Process Control (SPC) for batch consistency tracking.
- Strong documentation discipline, including CoA generation and batch record-keeping.
Education & Qualification
Minimum Education:
- B.E. / B.Tech in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science Engineering.
Preferred:
- M.E. / M.Tech in Metallurgy – added advantage but not mandatory.
Alternative Background:
- B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical or Production Engineering with proven hands-on foundry, casting, or alloy experience.
Preferred Certifications / Exposure:
- Exposure to IPC J-STD-006.
- Six Sigma / SPC basics.
- Spectrometer operation certification or relevant hands-on experience.
Preferred Industry Background
Candidates with experience in the following industries will be preferred:
- Solder / electronics alloy manufacturing.
- Non-ferrous foundries involving tin, zinc, or aluminum alloy casting.
- Wire drawing / rod casting units.
- Investment / die casting with alloy composition control requirements.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
The candidate will be evaluated based on:
- Batch composition first-pass acceptance rate: Target >98% within specification on the first OES test.
- Metal yield / dross loss percentage: Lower dross loss and improved metal yield.
- Casting defect rate: Reduction in porosity, cracks, and other casting defects per batch.
- On-time CoA issuance: Timely issuance of Certificate of Analysis for every batch.
- Customer quality performance: Reduction in customer composition and quality complaints.
Ideal Candidate
We are looking for a technically strong and hands-on Metallurgical Engineer who can work directly on the manufacturing floor and take ownership of alloy composition, melting, casting, quality control, troubleshooting, and process improvement.
The candidate should be comfortable working in a furnace-floor manufacturing environment and coordinating closely with production, quality, operators, suppliers, and management teams.
