A Vertical Machining Center (VMC) Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining CNC milling machines to produce precision metal or plastic parts. They translate technical blueprints into machine programs (G-code/M-code), install tools, perform quality inspections, and maintain a safe, efficient manufacturing environment.
Core Responsibilities
- Machine Setup & Operation: Set up, calibrate, and operate VMC machines according to technical drawings and project specifications.
- Programming & Adjustments: Load, edit, and troubleshoot CNC programs using G-code and M-code. Adjust machine parameters like feed rates, rapid rates, and tool offsets.
- Tooling: Select, install, and replace cutting tools, drills, and end mills based on material hardness and job requirements.
- Quality Control: Inspect finished workpieces using precision measuring instruments (e.g., calipers, micrometers) to ensure they meet strict tolerance standards.
- Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Perform routine maintenance (cleaning, lubricating), diagnose equipment malfunctions, and resolve production issues.
- Compliance & Safety: Adhere strictly to workplace safety protocols and maintain a clean work area, often following 5S methodologies.
Key Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: ITI, Diploma, or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Machining, or a related technical field.
- Experience: 1 to 5+ years of hands-on experience setting up and operating VMC machines (e.g., systems utilizing Siemens controllers).
- Technical Skills: Strong ability to read and interpret engineering blueprints, schematics, and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) symbols.
- Analytical Skills: Excellent problem-solving abilities and strong attention to detail to minimize scrap and maximize machine uptime.
Typical Working Conditions & Expectations
- Environment: Works in a manufacturing, tool-and-die, or production facility. The environment involves standing for long periods and requires wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) like safety glasses and steel-toed boots.
- Physical Demands: Ability to lift heavy materials, fixtures, and tools, as well as maneuver heavy workpieces into the machine bed.
- Schedule: Often requires willingness to work in rotating shifts, overtime, and weekends depending on production demands.
Pay: ₹25,000.00 - ₹30,000.00 per month
