Job Summary
We are hiring a Senior Sheet Metal Design Engineer with strong experience in kiosk and enclosure design to lead mechanical product development from concept to production. The ideal candidate should have hands-on expertise in SolidWorks Sheet Metal and a strong understanding of fabrication processes such as laser cutting, punching, bending, welding, PEM insertion, and powder coating. The role involves driving Design for Manufacturing (DFM), prototype development, vendor coordination, and production support.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Own end-to-end mechanical design of kiosks and enclosures, including structures, panels, doors, internal brackets, mounts, hinges, locks, and service access mechanisms.
- Create and manage 3D CAD models in SolidWorks, including sheet metal parts, assemblies, and configurations while ensuring proper design intent.
- Prepare manufacturing-ready 2D drawings with GD&T, tolerances, weld symbols, surface finish specifications, and assembly notes.
- Drive DFM/DFA improvements through optimized bend reliefs, corner treatments, stiffening features, fasteners, PEM inserts, accessibility, and manufacturability enhancements.
- Coordinate with sheet metal fabrication vendors for laser cutting, punching, bending, welding (MIG/TIG/Spot), riveting, and finishing processes such as powder coating and painting.
- Lead prototype builds, troubleshoot fit and finish issues, and implement engineering changes through ECO/ECR processes.
- Select appropriate materials and finishes, including CRCA, HR, Stainless Steel, Aluminum, powder coating, textures, colors, and corrosion protection methods.
- Collaborate with Electrical and Industrial Design teams for component packaging, cable routing, thermal management, ventilation, and serviceability requirements.
- Support Manufacturing and Quality teams during pilot runs and production by resolving design and process-related issues and driving continuous improvement initiatives.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Deliver complete mechanical designs of kiosks and enclosures from concept to production within committed timelines.
- Create accurate, manufacturing-ready 3D models, assemblies, and detailed 2D drawings in SolidWorks.
- Achieve a high first-pass approval rate for designs and drawings with minimal rework.
- Maintain accurate BOMs, part numbers, revision histories, and release documentation.
- Drive DFM/DFA initiatives to improve manufacturability, assembly efficiency, and cost optimization.
- Minimize prototype and production issues by proactively addressing fit, finish, tolerance, and assembly challenges.
- Ensure successful prototype builds and timely closure of design issues through ECO/ECR implementation.
- Coordinate effectively with fabrication vendors for laser cutting, punching, bending, welding, riveting, and finishing requirements.
- Ensure proper selection of materials, finishes, hardware, and corrosion protection based on application requirements.
- Collaborate with Electrical, Industrial Design, Manufacturing, and Quality teams to meet packaging, cable routing, thermal performance, and serviceability requirements.
- Improve product robustness, quality, and production readiness during pilot and mass production phases.
- Demonstrate strong ownership, technical leadership, and cross-functional problem-solving skills across all assigned projects.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
- 6–10+ years of relevant experience in sheet metal design, specifically for kiosks, enclosures, terminals, or similar fabricated products.
- Strong proficiency in SolidWorks for sheet metal design, assemblies, configurations, and manufacturing drawings.
- Thorough understanding of sheet metal fabrication processes, GD&T, tolerances, materials, finishes, and production documentation.
- Proven experience in prototype development, vendor coordination, DFM/DFA implementation, and production support.
- Exposure to PDM/PLM systems and design considerations such as IP protection, thermal management, serviceability, and security hardware is preferred.
