About SIG
Strata Information Group (SIG) is a US-based leader in higher-education technology consulting. We help colleges and universities modernize the systems that run their institutions — student information, HR, and finance — through ERP/SIS implementation, integration, digital transformation, CRM, and cybersecurity work.
We are building our first engineering Center of Excellence in Pune. This is a founding-team role. You will not be joining a large delivery pool with a fixed process — you will help set how this team builds.
The Role
This is a software engineering job. You will spend most of your time writing and shipping code.
You will take functional specifications and turn them into working software across three areas: application integrations, Experience Card development for user-facing functionality, and workflow automation using Ellucian's workflow tooling. Every one of those runs on APIs — you build against the REST APIs exposed by Ellucian's student, HR, and finance platforms, which keeps you largely independent of backend database internals.
There is a consulting dimension. You will join client calls, walk stakeholders through what you have built, and contribute to enablement and configuration delivery. But the center of the job is engineering.
You will also help build it faster. We expect this team to use AI coding assistants as a normal part of daily development, and to contribute to the internal AI tooling SIG is building to compress delivery timelines.
APIs Are the Core of This Work
If there is one thing to take from this description, it is this: your primary skill is working with APIs.
Ellucian exposes a very large API surface across its student, HR, and finance platforms. A significant part of the job is knowing that catalog — reading a business requirement, working out which APIs actually serve that function, understanding what each one returns and what it does not, and then writing the code that meets the requirement. Nobody hands you a mapping from business need to endpoint. You build that understanding, and it becomes some of the most valuable knowledge you carry.
The second half is API security. These APIs move student records, employee data, and financial transactions. You need to understand authentication and authorization flows, how tokens and scopes work, and how to request only the access an integration genuinely needs. Getting this wrong is not a bug — it is a data exposure.
We are looking for depth here, not familiarity. Someone who has consumed a few REST endpoints will struggle. Someone who has designed, secured, debugged, and versioned real integrations will do well.
What You Will Do
- Map business requirements to the right Ellucian APIs — investigate the available API catalog, determine which endpoints serve a given function, and validate that the data you need is actually there before you build.
- Build and ship integrations between Ellucian platforms and third-party systems using REST APIs and JSON.
- Develop Experience Cards — React-based UI components that deliver functionality directly to students, faculty, and staff.
- Design and implement automated business processes using Ellucian Workflow.
- Translate written specifications into production code, independently, with limited hand-holding.
- Use AI coding assistants (GitHub Copilot, Claude, and similar) as a standard part of your development workflow.
- Contribute to and extend SIG's internal AI tooling that automates parts of the delivery process.
- Configure integrations securely — scope credentials and service accounts to least privilege, and handle sensitive student, HR, and finance data safely in transit and at rest.
- Evaluate and adopt low-code and no-code tools where they are the faster path to a working solution.
- Participate in client-facing sessions — requirement walkthroughs, demos, and enablement delivery.
Required Qualifications
- 3–5 years of professional software development experience.
- Deep REST API fluency — this is the most important requirement. You should be comfortable reading API documentation to work out what a system can do, consuming and designing endpoints, and handling authentication, tokens and scopes, pagination, rate limits, error and retry behaviour, versioning, and webhooks.
- API security. Authentication and authorization patterns (OAuth 2.0, API keys, JWT), least-privilege scope and service-account design, secrets handling, and a working awareness of how over-permissioned integrations create data exposure.
- Strong JavaScript engineering — Node.js on the server, React for user interfaces. This is how you will build.
- Comfortable with HTML5 and CSS for building real interfaces, not just wiring them.
- Working knowledge of common cloud and file-transfer technologies — AWS S3 (buckets, access policies, lifecycle), SFTP, and secure file exchange between systems.
- Git-based version control and modern development workflow.
- Demonstrated ability to work from a written specification and deliver independently, without daily supervision.
- Clear written and verbal English — you will be talking directly to US-based clients and colleagues.
- Genuine interest in AI-assisted development, and evidence you have used these tools in real work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with AI/ML tooling, LLM APIs, prompt engineering, or building internal developer tools.
- Automated testing built with AI assistance — generating test cases, unit and integration suites, or regression coverage using AI tools rather than writing every test by hand.
- Exposure to low-code or no-code platforms and a view on when they are the right choice.
- Experience with API tooling and standards — Postman, OpenAPI/Swagger, GraphQL, or API gateway platforms.
- Prior work in higher education technology, or with any enterprise ERP, SIS, HRMS, or finance platform.
- Experience with Ellucian products — Banner, Colleague, Ethos, Experience, or Workflow.
- SQL and relational database fundamentals.
- Experience working with distributed teams across time zones.
Ellucian Experience Is Not Required — We Will Teach You
Ellucian platform knowledge is rare in the Indian market, and we are not screening for it. We are screening for engineering ability and how quickly you learn.
If you join without a higher-education background, you will be given a structured ramp-up:
- Access to Ellucian training and certification, with badging targeted in your first 60 days.
- Direct knowledge transfer from SIG's US delivery consultants, who have decades of platform depth — including guided orientation to the Ellucian API landscape.
- A defined, tangible deliverable to complete during onboarding, so you are building real work early rather than only studying.
What we need from you is the ability to absorb a new domain fast and start contributing inside two months.
Working Hours
Flexible schedule with a daily overlap requirement of 3–4 hours with US Eastern morning. In practice, this means your working day extends into the IST evening — typically finishing around 9:00–10:00 PM IST, with a corresponding later start.
Outside that overlap window, you manage your own hours. We care about what you deliver, not when you are logged in.
Who Does Well Here
- You are self-driven. You unblock yourself, ask sharp questions, and do not wait to be assigned work.
- You are curious about the tools that make you faster, and you actually try them.
- You are comfortable being early. This team is being built now, and the process is not fully written.
- You can talk to a non-technical client and explain what you built without making them feel lost.
