We are looking for an experienced Materials Consultant to work with us on a freelance basis and provide expert guidance on material selection for our existing and upcoming precision products.
This role is critical in helping us choose the right materials to achieve superior performance, durability, manufacturability, and consistency, especially for small, high-precision components.
Key Responsibilities:
- Evaluate and recommend suitable materials based on product function and performance requirements
- Advise on material selection for strength, wear resistance, sharpness retention, corrosion resistance, and durability
- Suggest alternative materials to improve product performance, quality, and cost efficiency
- Provide insights on materials suitable for precision machining and manufacturing
- Review existing products and recommend improvements in material choice
- Assist in material selection for new product development
- Guide on surface treatments, coatings, and finishing processes where applicable
Requirements:
- Proven experience in materials engineering, metallurgy, or material science
- Strong understanding of metals, alloys, and engineering materials
- Experience with precision components and machining
- Knowledge of stainless steels, tool steels, titanium, and related materials
- Ability to recommend materials based on functional and manufacturing requirements
- Practical, application-focused approach to material selection
Preferred:
- Experience with medical devices, surgical instruments, or precision engineering products
- Knowledge of heat treatment, hardening, and surface finishing
- Familiarity with wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant materials
- Ability to work closely with design and manufacturing teams
