Designation: Lab Technician – Phlebotomist

Job Purpose
To perform safe and accurate collection, identification, labeling, handling and transportation of patient specimens while maintaining patient safety, infection control and laboratory quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect blood samples through venipuncture and capillary methods as per laboratory procedures.
- Properly identify patients before sample collection using appropriate patient identifiers.
- Verify the test requisition and collect the correct specimen and appropriate collection tube.
- Explain the procedure to patients and provide proper care and reassurance during blood collection.
- Accurately label all specimens with patient details, date and time of collection.
- Handle, process and transport specimens to the laboratory while maintaining specimen integrity.
- Give priority to STAT, emergency and time-sensitive samples as instructed.
- Collect other clinical specimens such as urine, stool, swab and other samples as per training and laboratory requirements.
- Assist in basic specimen processing such as centrifugation, aliquoting and preparation where assigned.
- Maintain proper records, registers and computer/LIS entries related to specimen collection.
- Follow infection control, biomedical waste management and sharps disposal procedures.
- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene of the phlebotomy area and equipment.
- Check availability of blood collection tubes, needles, syringes, gloves and other consumables and inform the Lab In-charge when stock is low.
- Report difficult collections, adverse reactions, sample rejection or identification errors immediately to the Lab In-charge.
- Coordinate with nursing staff, doctors and laboratory personnel for timely sample collection.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and professional behaviour at all times.
- Participate in laboratory quality, safety and NABH-related activities and documentation.
- Perform any other laboratory/phlebotomy duties assigned by the Lab In-charge.
Qualification
- DMLT / B.Sc. MLT / BMLT or equivalent relevant qualification.
- Practical training in phlebotomy and specimen collection preferred.
Experience
- 1–2 years of experience in hospital/diagnostic laboratory preferred.
- Freshers with appropriate practical training may be considered.
