Job Summary
The Dialysis Technician is responsible for preparing, operating, and maintaining dialysis equipment while providing safe, high-quality care to patients undergoing hemodialysis.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare dialysis machines and treatment stations before each dialysis session.
- Verify patient identity, dialysis prescription, and treatment parameters before initiating dialysis.
- Set up, prime, and operate dialysis machines according to hospital protocols.
- Cannulate AV fistula, graft, or assist with central venous catheter connections as per competency and hospital policy.
- Monitor patients' vital signs before, during, and after dialysis treatment.
- Observe patients for complications such as hypotension, cramps, bleeding, allergic reactions, or dialysis-related emergencies and immediately inform the nurse.
- Maintain accurate documentation of treatment records, machine parameters, medications administered (if authorized), and patient observations.
- Ensure proper disinfection, cleaning, and preventive maintenance of dialysis machines and equipment.
- Follow biomedical waste management and infection prevention protocols.
- Prepare and maintain dialyzers, tubing, and dialysis consumables.
- Check water treatment systems (RO plant) and report any abnormalities.
- Maintain adequate inventory of dialysis consumables and report shortages.
- Educate patients and attendants regarding dialysis care, vascular access care, diet, and follow-up instructions.
- Coordinate with doctors, nurses, biomedical engineers, and housekeeping staff for smooth operation of the dialysis unit.
Required Qualifications
- Diploma/Bachelor's Degree in Dialysis Technology (B.Sc. Dialysis Technology or equivalent).
- Registration with the applicable council (if required by state regulations).
Experience
- 3–5 years: Preferred in a multispecialty hospital dialysis unit.
Required Skills
- Knowledge of hemodialysis procedures and dialysis machine operation.
- Understanding of infection control and aseptic techniques.
- Ability to monitor and respond to patient complications.
- Good communication and patient counseling skills.
- Strong documentation and record-keeping abilities.
- Teamwork and coordination with multidisciplinary healthcare professionals.
- Basic knowledge of emergency patient management and CPR.
Working Conditions
- Rotational shifts, including night shifts, weekends, and public holidays.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and assist in patient handling.
- Willingness to respond to emergency dialysis cases.
