An Assistant Professor or Associate Professor in Dermatology or Cosmetology (with an M.Sc. or B.Sc. background) is responsible for educating students in skin science, aesthetic treatments, and cosmetic formulations. They balance classroom teaching, practical laboratory training, and academic administration.While clinical medical dermatology (treating skin diseases) is typically taught by MD/DNB doctors, B.Sc./M.Sc. professionals in this space generally focus on cosmetic science, trichology, aesthetics, and advanced skincare technologies. Core Job Responsibilities1. Academic & Teaching Duties
- Deliver Lectures: Teach undergraduate (B.Sc.) and postgraduate (M.Sc.) students topics such as skin anatomy, physiology, cosmetic chemistry, trichology, and advanced aesthetic therapies.
- Practical Training: Demonstrate and supervise hands-on training for chemical peels, microdermabrasion, laser therapies, facial aesthetics, and the use of high-tech salon/clinic equipment.
- Curriculum Development: Design, review, and update syllabus content to keep pace with changing global trends in the beauty, wellness, and cosmetic industries.
2. Student Mentorship & Examination
- Project Supervision: Guide postgraduate students through their research projects, dissertations, and literature reviews in cosmetic science.
- Assessments: Design examination papers, conduct practical vivas, evaluate internal assignments, and grade final exams.
- Career Guidance: Mentor students regarding career pathways in clinical aesthetics, product manufacturing, regulatory affairs, or entrepreneurship.
3. Administrative & Institutional Contributions
- Lab Management: Oversee the maintenance, safety protocols, and inventory of cosmetology labs and aesthetic equipment.
- Event Coordination: Organize workshops, seminars, industrial visits, and guest lectures featuring industry experts.
- Departmental Support: Participate in faculty meetings, accreditation processes (like NAAC/NBA if applicable), and admission counseling.
4. Research & Upgradation (Crucial for Associate Professor rank)
- Publications: Conduct independent research in cosmetic formulation, skin safety, or clinical aesthetics and publish papers in indexed journals.
- Industry Liaison: Build connections with skincare brands, wellness chains, and cosmetic labs for student internships and placements.
