Service Mapping and Discovery Role Summary
As a ServiceNow Developer specializing in Discovery and Service Mapping, you will design, implement, and maintain accurate application/service visibility across the enterprise CMDB. You will build and optimize Discovery patterns, Service Mapping workflows, and CMDB data quality controls to ensure reliable service models that support ITOM, Event Management, Incident/Problem, Change, and Service Operations.
You will collaborate with infrastructure, network, application owners, platform teams, and service owners to map critical business services and improve operational outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
1) ServiceNow Discovery Implementation & Operations
· Configure and maintain ServiceNow Discovery (schedules, credentials, MID Servers, probes/sensors or patterns depending on version).
· Develop, customize, and troubleshoot Discovery patterns (horizontal and application patterns) to improve CI identification and relationships.
· Ensure secure credential handling and compliance with enterprise policies (e.g., credential vault integrations where applicable).
· Monitor Discovery health, performance, and failure trends; drive remediation and continuous optimization.
2) Service Mapping (Top-Down & Tag-Based where applicable)
· Build and maintain Service Maps for business-critical services and applications, ensuring accurate upstream/downstream dependencies.
· Configure service entry points, traffic-based discovery, and mapping rules.
· Work with application and infrastructure teams to validate maps, reduce “unknown” nodes, and ensure lifecycle ownership of service models.
· Support use cases such as impact analysis, change risk, service health, and major incident triage.
3) CMDB Data Quality, Governance & CSDM Alignment
· Apply CMDB best practices and align with Common Service Data Model (CSDM) concepts (Business Service, Application Service, Technical Service, offerings, etc.).
· Implement data quality controls using CMDB Health, reconciliation rules, CI lifecycle governance, and normalization/deduplication techniques.
· Support auditability: CI completeness, correctness, compliance, and ownership.
Required Experience & Skills (4–7 Years)
Must-Have Technical Skills
· 4–7 years of ServiceNow development/implementation experience with strong exposure to:
o ServiceNow Discovery
o Service Mapping
o CMDB fundamentals (CI classes, relationships, reconciliation)
· Hands-on experience with:
o MID Server setup and troubleshooting
o Credential configuration and secure access patterns
o Discovery scheduling, classification, identification rules, and pattern debugging
· ServiceNow scripting capability:
o JavaScript, Script Includes, Business Rules (as needed for Discovery/CMDB use cases)
· Strong understanding of IT infrastructure concepts:
o Windows/Linux basics, networking (DNS, IP ranges, ports), web/app stacks, middleware, databases
