Job Summary
This role is for an Engineering Manager with strong background in IBM mainframe utilities Endevor VSAM JCL and Cobol responsible for guiding hybrid model delivery teams that build and maintain critical enterprise applications while ensuring high quality operational resilience and continuous improvement for large scale clients in a day shift environment.
Responsibilities
Manage end to end delivery of IBM mainframe application enhancements using Cobol JCL and VSAM to ensure stable and efficient business processing
Coordinate hybrid model development teams to plan estimate and execute mainframe changes that align with agreed scope schedule and quality expectations
Oversee design and review of Cobol programs and JCL streams to ensure robust logic optimal performance and adherence to organizational coding standards
Guide teams in effective use of IBM mainframe utilities to perform data analysis file handling batch job control and production support activities with high reliability
Monitor and optimize VSAM dataset structures and access patterns to improve throughput reduce failures and maintain data integrity across critical business workflows
Administer and supervise Endevor configuration and promotion workflows so that all changes follow controlled and auditable deployment practices
Coordinate defect triage and incident resolution on mainframe platforms by prioritizing issues assigning work and tracking progress until sustainable closure
Collaborate with product owners and business analysts to translate requirements into clear technical tasks for Cobol JCL and VSAM based solutions
Implement quality assurance practices such as code reviews unit test planning and regression strategies to reduce production defects and improve maintainability
Develop and track metrics related to batch job performance failure rates and change cycle times to identify improvement opportunities and drive actionable outcomes
Plan knowledge sharing sessions on IBM mainframe utilities Endevor workflows and Cobol development techniques to uplift overall team capability
Align engineering practices with company standards for security compliance and risk management by validating controls within mainframe applications and processes
Coordinate with infrastructure and operations teams to schedule deployments manage batch windows and ensure minimal disruption during releases
Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on simplifying mainframe job flows reducing manual effort and improving developer productivity
Qualifications
Possess eight to twelve years of hands on experience in IBM mainframe environments with deep expertise in Cobol programming JCL creation and VSAM file management
Demonstrate strong working knowledge of IBM mainframe utilities including file management sorting and debugging tools used in complex enterprise systems
Show proven experience using Endevor or similar mainframe configuration tools to manage code versioning environment promotion and controlled releases
Exhibit ability to analyze existing Cobol applications and JCL chains to identify performance bottlenecks resiliency gaps and modernization opportunities
Apply solid understanding of batch scheduling concepts dependency management and error handling practices in large mainframe landscapes
Communicate clearly with diverse stakeholders including engineers analysts and client partners to explain technical options and delivery tradeoffs
Display familiarity with hybrid work environments and collaborative tools that support coordination across onsite and remote team members
Utilize structured problem solving techniques and root cause analysis methods when addressing production incidents or recurring defects in mainframe jobs
Maintain awareness of secure coding practices data protection expectations and regulatory considerations relevant to enterprise mainframe workloads
