Responsibilities – Cylindrical Grinding Operator
(Rotor Shaft Grinding – Lathe & Cylindrical Grinding Machine)
Machine Operation
- Operate Cylindrical Grinding Machine for rotor shaft finishing.
- Perform rough and finish grinding as per drawing specifications.
- Set job in machine using proper centers, chucks, and fixtures.
- Ensure correct alignment before starting operation.
- Adjust machine parameters (speed, feed, depth of cut).
Job Preparation & Setup
- Read and understand engineering drawings..
- Check raw shaft dimensions before grinding.
- Select appropriate grinding wheel based on material.
- Dress grinding wheel as required.
- Maintain proper coolant flow during grinding.
Dimensional Accuracy & Quality Control
- Achieve specified tolerances (OD, taper, concentrically, run-out).
- Use measuring instruments:
- Micrometer
- Vernier caliper
- Dial gauge
- Bore gauge (if required)
- Ensure surface finish as per requirement.
- Avoid over grinding and dimensional rejection.
- Record inspection results.
Rotor Shaft Specific Responsibilities
- Maintain concentrically between bearing seat and shaft OD.
- Ensure proper grinding of:
- Bearing seating area
- Seal seating area
- Thread portions (if applicable)
- Avoid heat marks and burning on shaft.
- Maintain balance-related dimensions.
Maintenance & Safety
- Perform daily machine cleaning and lubrication.
- Inspect grinding wheel condition regularly.
- Follow safety procedures while operating rotating equipment.
- Report machine abnormalities immediately.
Productivity & Efficiency
- Meet daily production targets.
- Minimize rejection and rework.
- Maintain low cycle time.
- Reduce material wastage.
Coordination
- Coordinate with:
- Lathe operator (previous process)
- Quality inspector
- Production supervisor
- Ensure smooth process flow.
Key Skills Required
- Knowledge of cylindrical grinding operations..
- Understanding of tolerances and fits..
- Knowledge of rotor shaft applications in motors..
- Ability to read technical drawings..
- Basic machine maintenance knowledge..
