Senior Hematology Technician
Job Summary
The Senior Hematology Technician is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely processing of hematology samples, maintaining compliance with NABL requirements, preparing and maintaining quality documentation, performing peripheral blood smear preparation and preliminary review, and assisting the pathologist in smear interpretation. The role also includes quality management, troubleshooting, training junior staff, and maintaining laboratory standards.
Key Responsibilities
Hematology Operations
- Perform and supervise routine hematology testing.
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain hematology analyzers.
- Verify sample suitability before processing.
- Ensure timely reporting while maintaining quality standards.
- Troubleshoot analyzer flags and instrument issues.
Peripheral Blood Smear (PBS)
- Prepare high-quality peripheral blood smears.
- Perform appropriate staining (Leishman/Wright-Giemsa or laboratory protocol).
- Ensure smear quality before review.
- Conduct preliminary microscopic examination.
- Identify and document:
- RBC morphology
- WBC differential and abnormalities
- Platelet estimation and morphology
- Blood parasites
- Presence of blasts or atypical cells
- Other significant hematological findings
- Escalate abnormal findings promptly to the Consultant Pathologist.
- Assist the pathologist during smear interpretation.
NABL & Quality Management
- Prepare and maintain NABL documentation.
- Maintain SOPs and ensure periodic revisions.
- Maintain quality records and logs.
- Monitor Internal Quality Control (IQC).
- Participate in External Quality Assurance (EQAS/PT) programs.
- Assist during NABL internal audits and external assessments.
- Prepare CAPA documentation.
- Perform risk assessments and maintain quality indicators.
- Ensure compliance with ISO 15189/NABL guidelines.
- Maintain equipment maintenance and calibration records.
Required Qualifications
- B.Sc. MLT / DMLT / BMLT (Master's degree preferred but not mandatory)
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a diagnostic laboratory hematology department.
- Experience with automated hematology analyzers.
- Hands-on experience in peripheral blood smear preparation and review.
- Experience with NABL documentation and quality systems is essential.
Preferred Skills
- Strong knowledge of hematology principles.
- Good understanding of RBC, WBC, and platelet morphology.
- Familiarity with hematology analyzer flags and troubleshooting.
- Working knowledge of ISO 15189 and NABL requirements.
- Excellent documentation skills.
- Good organizational and communication abilities.
- Attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Ability to mentor junior staff.
Additional Responsibilities
- Participate in method validation and verification studies.
- Assist in implementation of new hematology tests and procedures.
- Support accreditation activities and quality improvement projects.
- Coordinate with other laboratory departments when required.
- Perform additional duties assigned by the Laboratory Manager or Consultant Pathologist.
Pay: From ₹22,000.00 per month
