We are building a legal knowledge graph in open source for India with a standardized set of concepts and relationships that can be used to improve knowledge management and data integration in the Indian legal industry. Staram is for a hands-on, technically strong Neo4j engineer who can design, build, automate, and maintain the backend knowledge graph layer end-to-end, with particular focus on compliance, regulatory, and risk data models.
The quality, structure, and semantic correctness of data ingested into the graph is mission-critical. The individual is expected to operate with high autonomy, translating vague or evolving requirements into robust graph-backed systems.
Key Responsibilities
Knowledge Graph Architecture & Engineering
· Design and implement Neo4j knowledge graph models for GRC, compliance, risk, and regulatory use cases.
· Define node-edge schemas, ontologies, constraints, indexing strategies, and versioning approaches suited for regulatory data.
· Write and optimise Cypher queries for traversal-heavy, compliance-grade use cases.
Backend & Data Pipelines
· Build and automate end-to-end data ingestion pipelines into Neo4j from structured and semi-structured sources (JSON, CSV, APIs, documents).
· Ensure data lineage, auditability, traceability, and consistency across the knowledge graph.
· Own the backend knowledge graph data layer, including performance tuning and scalability considerations.
Domain-Aware Engineering (GRC / Compliance)
· Work closely with domain experts (lawyers, company secretaries, compliance teams) to translate regulatory and compliance requirements into graph models.
· Implement data structures that support:
o Regulatory obligations
o Compliance timelines
o Risk relationships
o Entity-role-action-event mappings
· Prior exposure to GRC, RegTech, LegalTech, or Compliance platforms is highly preferred.
Independent Execution & Problem Solving
· Convert high-level ideas or loosely defined requirements into production-ready implementations.
· Identify gaps in data models or ingestion logic and proactively resolve them.
· Take ownership of technical decisions related to the knowledge graph layer with minimal supervision.
· Collaborate with frontend, product, and analytics teams to expose graph-backed insights to applications.
· Support downstream use cases such as analytics, dashboards, AI/ML, or GraphRAG (where relevant).
Required Skills & Experience
Must-Have
· Strong, hands-on experience with Neo4j
o Graph modelling
o Cypher query design and optimisation
o Constraints, indexes, performance tuning
· Solid backend engineering experience (Python / Java preferred).
· Experience building data pipelines and backend systems end-to-end.
· Ability to work independently and take full ownership of deliverables.
· Exposure to ontology design or semantic data modelling.
Strongly Preferred
· Prior experience with GRC, Compliance, RegTech, LegalTech, or Risk platforms.
· Experience working with large, evolving datasets where schema discipline is critical.
· Understanding of audit, compliance, or regulatory data expectations (immutability, traceability, versioning).
· Exposure to GraphRAG, LLM + graph systems, or AI-driven compliance tools.
· Experience with MongoDB, GraphQL, or similar supporting technologies.
· Familiarity with DevOps basics and cloud-native deployments.
