Backend Engineer — e works
Experience: 5+ Years | Location: Bangalore | Type: Full-time
About the Role
e works is building the backend backbone of India's EdTech platform — powering our LMS, job portal, and payments infrastructure. As a Backend Engineer, you'll own the design, development, and scalability of our core APIs and data systems, including our payment and wallet/payout architecture.
What You'll Do
· Design and build REST APIs powering our LMS, job portal, and payments systems
· Own the data layer on PostgreSQL — schema design, migrations, and query optimization
· Architect and maintain our payment integrations (Razorpay, Stripe) and internal wallet/ledger system, ensuring transactional accuracy and idempotency
· Implement authentication, authorization, and role-based access control (JWT, RBAC)
· Build and maintain background job processing for async payment/payout workflows
· Mentor junior engineers through code reviews and design discussions; take ownership of architecture decisions within your modules
· Collaborate with frontend and product teams to define API contracts and system requirements
· Deploy and monitor services on AWS using Docker and CI/CD pipelines
Must-Have Skills
· 5+ years of professional backend development experience
· Strong hands-on experience with Node.js, Express.js, and TypeScript
· Proficiency in PostgreSQL — relational schema design, transactions, migrations, query optimization
· Proven experience designing and scaling REST APIs
· Experience with JWT authentication and role-based access control
· Experience integrating payment gateways (Razorpay, Stripe, or similar) — including webhooks, signature verification, and refund handling
· Solid understanding of transactional data integrity — ACID transactions, idempotency (critical for payment/ledger correctness)
· Experience with Git/GitHub in a collaborative team environment
Good to Have
· Experience with Redis for caching and queues
· Background job processing (BullMQ or similar)
· Exposure to Docker, AWS (EC2, S3, RDS), and CI/CD pipelines
· Understanding of double-entry ledger / wallet system design
· Experience mentoring engineers or owning a module/service end-to-end
What We're Looking For
Someone who can take ownership of a system end-to-end — from design through deployment — and guide junior engineers along the way. Formal team-lead experience is a plus but not required; what matters most is technical depth and the judgment to make sound architecture decisions independently.
