Core Roles & Responsibilities1. CMM Programming & Development
- Write Scripts: Write, debug, and optimize automated inspection programs using specialized software like PC-DMIS, Zeiss Calypso, or Camio CAD.
- CAD Integration: Import 3D CAD models to plan and define automated measurement paths for the machine's probe.
- Blueprint Translation: Interpret complex engineering drawings to extract necessary nominal geometric info and tolerances. [
- Drawing Ballooning: Perform ballooning on 2D and 3D specifications to assign measurable identification numbers to every critical characteristic.
2. Machine Operation & Inspection
- Perform Checks: Conduct detailed dimensional inspections on individual components and larger final assemblies.
- Part Setup: Design, build, and configure work-holding fixtures to anchor parts securely during probing.
- Advanced Metrology: Execute specialized surface analysis, contour measurements, and profile sweeps.
- First Article Inspection: Execute First Article Inspections (FAI) and support custom AS9102 packages for early-stage parts validation. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
3. Equipment Calibration & Maintenance
- Probe Calibration: Perform daily probe qualifications and routine calibration checks to safeguard sensor accuracy.
- Environment Control: Monitor the climate of the metrology lab since temperature fluctuations directly alter material dimensions.
- Software Updates: Update metrology operating systems and maintain standard work instructions for hardware setup. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
4. Data Analysis & Quality Reporting
- Analyze Deviations: Review computational inspection reports to isolate dimensional deviations from design targets.
- Process Capabilities: Complete statistical analysis, Gage R&R (Repeatability and Reproducibility) studies, and process capability (CPK) metrics.
- PPAP Submissions: Assist in preparing data packages for Production Part Approval Processes (PPAP). [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
5. Cross-Functional Collaboration [1, 2]
- Engineering Feedback: Coordinate with manufacturing and design engineers to resolve ambiguous drawing requirements or structural flaws.
- Troubleshoot Downtime: Solve physical machine faults or programming bugs quickly to protect tight production schedules.
- Team Training: Mentor junior CMM operators, quality inspectors, and shop floor staff on part setup and data readout interpretation. [1, 2, 3]
