The OPD Nurse is responsible for delivering high-quality nursing care to patients visiting the outpatient department. The role involves patient assessment, assisting physicians, administering medications, maintaining records, and ensuring smooth patient flow within the department.
Key Responsibilities1. Patient Care & Assessment
- Assess patients’ vital signs (BP, temperature, pulse, respiration, oxygen saturation).
- Record medical history and presenting complaints.
- Prepare patients for examination and procedures.
- Provide first aid and emergency care when required.
2. Clinical Duties
- Assist doctors during examinations and minor procedures.
- Administer prescribed medications (oral, IM, IV, SC).
- Perform wound dressing, injections, and IV cannulation.
- Collect and label specimens (blood, urine, etc.).
- Monitor patient condition and report abnormalities.
3. Documentation & Record Keeping
- Maintain accurate patient records and nursing notes.
- Update electronic medical records (EMR) if applicable.
- Ensure proper documentation of medications and procedures.
4. Patient Education
- Educate patients on medication use and follow-up care.
- Provide health education regarding disease prevention.
- Explain discharge instructions clearly.
5. Coordination & Administration
- Schedule patient appointments and manage patient flow.
- Coordinate with lab, pharmacy, and other departments.
- Maintain stock of medical supplies and equipment.
- Follow infection control and safety protocols.
Required Qualifications
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (GNM/BSc Nursing).
- Valid nursing license/registration.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (preferred).
- 1–2 years of clinical experience (preferred).
Required Skills
- Strong clinical assessment skills.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to handle emergencies calmly.
- Knowledge of infection control practices.
- Basic computer skills for documentation.
Work Environment
- Hospital or clinic outpatient setting.
- May require standing for long periods.
- Day shifts; occasional extended hours depending on patient load.
