Overview
iNSPIRE Design is a product design, engineering, and prototyping company based in Ahmedabad. We work on medical devices, healthcare products, automation systems, and early-stage product-development projects.
Our work often begins with an open-ended problem rather than a finalized specification. We research possible technologies, test different approaches, develop functional prototypes, and progressively convert the selected solution into a practical product design.
We are looking for a hands-on Mechanical Engineering Intern who can support the complete engineering-development process: from early-stage R&D and experimentation to CAD development, BOM preparation, prototyping, testing, and documentation.
This is not a CAD-only role.
Role Purpose
The selected candidate will work on real product-development projects involving mechanical systems, medical devices, healthcare products, and automation equipment.
The role requires someone who can:
- Research unfamiliar technologies
- Break down technical problems into testable variables
- Conduct experiments and compare different approaches
- Develop engineering CAD models and assemblies
- Prepare BOMs and fabrication drawings
- Support prototype fabrication, assembly, testing, and iteration
- Coordinate with an industrial designer to convert functional concepts into ergonomic and usable products
The candidate should be comfortable working on projects where the final solution may not be immediately known.
Key Responsibilities1. Research and Development
- Research technologies, mechanisms, components, materials, and existing products relevant to active projects
- Identify possible technical approaches and compare their feasibility, cost, complexity, and limitations
- Prepare structured experiment plans to validate assumptions
- Build bench-level test setups and proof-of-concept prototypes
- Test different configurations systematically
- Troubleshoot prototype failures and identify root causes
- Document results, observations, and recommended next steps
2. Mechanical Product Development
- Develop 3D CAD models for parts, assemblies, housings, fixtures, and mechanisms
- Create internal component layouts and ensure proper fitment
- Develop concepts into functional mechanical designs
- Prepare 2D manufacturing drawings with dimensions, tolerances, and material specifications
- Design for manufacturability, assembly, maintenance, and cost-effectiveness
- Support design iteration based on testing feedback
3. BOM Development and Component Selection
- Prepare and maintain bills of materials
- Research components based on technical requirements, availability, cost, and lead time
- Compare motors, pumps, valves, heaters, sensors, fasteners, materials, and other relevant components
- Communicate with vendors for quotations and technical details
- Maintain records of selected components, alternatives, and sourcing information
4. Prototype Development and Testing
- Coordinate 3D printing, machining, fabrication, and basic procurement
- Support hands-on assembly of prototypes
- Conduct functional testing and record results
- Identify assembly issues, mechanical failures, and opportunities for improvement
- Work closely with the industrial designer during prototype assembly and usability evaluation
5. Documentation
- Maintain experiment logs, test results, CAD revisions, BOM updates, and project folders
- Prepare short technical summaries and recommendations
- Record design assumptions and engineering decisions
- Support preparation of technical documentation for clients and vendors
Nature of Projects
The selected candidate may work on projects such as:
- Medical imaging devices requiring testing of different lighting, sensor, and optical arrangements
- Healthcare products requiring evaluation of treatment-delivery methods
- Devices involving pumps, heaters, valves, motors, sensors, tubing, or mechanical mechanisms
- Automation equipment involving linear motion, fixtures, mechanical assemblies, and control systems
- Reverse-engineering projects
- Test fixtures and proof-of-concept prototypes
- Mechanical enclosures and internal layouts for electronic products
The candidate does not need to be an expert in all these areas. However, they must be willing to research, learn, experiment, and document their findings.
Candidate ProfileEducational Background
- Final-year student or recent graduate in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Production Engineering, Automobile Engineering, or a related field
- Recent graduates with up to 1 year of relevant experience may also apply
Required Skills
- Basic understanding of mechanical engineering principles
- Ability to create 3D CAD models and assemblies
- Familiarity with at least one CAD software such as SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Creo, Inventor, or equivalent
- Basic understanding of materials and manufacturing processes
- Strong problem-solving ability
- Willingness to perform hands-on testing and prototype assembly
- Ability to research technical topics independently
- Ability to document work clearly
- Good written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Skills
The following are preferred but not mandatory:
- Experience with 3D printing, machining, fabrication, or workshop tools
- Experience preparing BOMs and manufacturing drawings
- Basic knowledge of Arduino, Raspberry Pi, sensors, motors, pumps, heaters, or electronics
- Experience building prototypes, college projects, robots, machines, vehicles, or hardware products
- Participation in Formula Student, SAE, robotics, hackathons, innovation challenges, or technical competitions
- Exposure to vendor coordination or component sourcing
- Familiarity with medical devices, healthcare products, or automation equipment
Ideal Candidate Qualities
We are looking for someone who:
- Enjoys solving practical engineering problems
- Is curious about how products work
- Can learn new technologies quickly
- Is comfortable working with incomplete information
- Can take ownership of a task and move it forward independently
- Is willing to test multiple approaches rather than assume the first idea will work
- Can explain failures, identify causes, and propose the next experiment
- Is comfortable working on both a computer and in a workshop or prototype environment
- Is willing to visit local vendors when required
- Can work across multiple projects with changing technical requirements
Important Clarification
This is not a desk-only CAD modelling role.
Candidates looking only for drafting, modelling, or repetitive design work may not be suitable.
The role involves:
- Research
- Practical experimentation
- Hands-on prototyping
- Mechanical design
