A Pipe Fabricator in the shipping and marine industry is a skilled technician responsible for reading blueprints, cutting, bending, fitting, and welding various types of pipes (carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, alloy) to create or repair piping systems on vessels. They often work in tight, complex spaces, ensuring all systems meet maritime safety and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Blueprint Reading: Interpreting isometric drawings, piping layouts, and spool drawings to determine material requirements and fabrication techniques.
- Cutting & Shaping: Using oxy-acetylene torches, saws, and grinders to cut and bevel pipe ends.
- Fitting & Assembly: Aligning, fitting, and tack-welding pipe components like flanges, elbows, and tees, often using jigs or fixtures.
- Welding: Performing welding (MIG, TIG, Stick/Arc) on various piping materials.
- System Testing: Conducting hydrostatic or pneumatic pressure tests to ensure no leaks exist in the repaired or new pipe spools.
- Installation: Installing fabricated pipe spools on ships, including securing them with hangers and brackets.
- Maintenance: Repairing and maintaining ship piping systems, including fuel, steam, bilge, hydraulic, and sewage systems
